Cajuns fall to loser's bracket in tourney

LAKE CHARLES -- The New Iberia Holiday Sporting Goods Cajuns dropped their first game of the American Legion Sub-regional at Legion Park but have battled back in the loser’s bracket and still have a chance to qualify for the Amewrican Legion State Tournament to be held next week.

The Cajuns dropped their first game 6-5 to Eunice Friday morning but came back to eliminate the St. Louis Jaxx Saturday and will play their second elimination game today at 1 p.m. against an opponent that has yet to be determined but is expected to be the winner of the Sulphur and Opelousas.

New Iberia must win their remaining games in the loser’s bracket and finish as one of the two remaining teams in the sub-regional to qualify for the state tournament.

Cajuns 11, Jaxx 1, 7 innings

In their first elimination game Saturday, Nevin Landry had two hits, including a two-run home run, and Richie Mouret added two hits , including a solo homer, as the Cajuns beat the Jaxx 11-1 in a game shortened to seven innings by the mercy rule.

In addition to Landry and Mouret, four other Cajuns had two hits in the win. Bryce Sibille had two hits, including a double, Jordan Abney, Zane Migues and Matt Geoffroy each each had two hits in the win.

Hunter Crochet doubled and Derick Huval singled for the Cajuns.

Cody Boutte went six innings and allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and issued only two walks.

Kyle Hoffpauir pitched one inning and allowed one walk and had one strikeout.

Individual statistics for St. Louis were not available.

Eunice 6, Cajuns 5

On Friday, in the first game of the sub-regional, Coby Landry gave up six runs on 10 hits in seven innings as Eunice knocked the Cajuns in the loser’s bracket with a 6-5 victory.

Kyle Hoffpauir pitched an inning of relief and allowed only one hit.

Bryce Sibille and Nevin Landry each had two hits, while Christian Guidry doubled and Matt Geoffroy and Jordan Abney singled in the loss.

Individual statistics for Eunice were not available.
