Offered by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Office of Continuing Education, the Pot-pourri program offers courses ranging from the artistic and entertaining to the professional and educational. The eclectic offering of classes provides residents of the Teche Area with a valuable resource in personal and academic enrichment.
Courses fall under categories such as youth, professional devel-opment, computers and technolo-gy, safety and environmental and the diverse Potpourri category. Classes meet in Lafayette at the Continuing Education Center, the Brook Street Annex building, the Conference Center and specialized laboratories throughout campus.

“Classes start anywhere from $28-30 all the way up to $1,600,” Provost said.
The courses that offer certification, technical and professional courses such as pharmacy technician or medical transcriptionist, can cost more.
“For the certificate and career courses continuing education loans are available,” Provost said.
Provost said all their professional courses are popular, with high enrollment in courses such as accounting and project and time management and the paralegal, medical transcription and human resources programs.
“We always have large numbers in our computer courses: Excel spreadsheet, Web design and the Adobe classes in the computer division,” Provost said.
Professional development is not the sole focus of Potpourri. Parents can still get their children out of the heat and into the classroom by signing them up for the youth courses.
For those seeking a head start on the fall, there are academic courses such as study skills, math and reading, Provost said. Those less interested in summer academics can find alternatives such as dance, drama, painting and even baby sitting and cupcakes in the program’s list of offerings.
Classes begin at varying times, with some beginning this month and lasting until the end of August, merging with the upcoming fall offerings.
“Some begin Sept. 21, but people can sign up for courses that start in early to mid October,” Provost said. “There is definitely still time for any computer class you want to take, such as (medical) transcription, which is an online program.”
In addition to personal development, Teche Area residents also can sign up for the popular healthier living classes, such as Tai Chi, Pilates and the aerobic-fitness program Zumba, a relatively recent addition to the usual pantheon of fitness programs.
“It’s like an aerobics class,” Provost said, “but it’s more dance, with a Latin flair. It’s definitely not the step-style aerobics people think of.”
