Making his choice

The list of recent college signees that have come out of Catholic High’s football program has been impressive.

Josh Dworaczyk and Mitch Joseph chose LSU two years ago. Ryan St. Julien joined the duo last year in Baton Rouge. Michael and Matthew Desormeaux both chose Louisiana-Lafayette. Zeek Zacharie and Josh Boudreaux played at Louisiana-Monroe.

On Monday, senior quarterback Taylor Bullock became the latest CHS football player to make his college choice, committing to sign with Tulane after narrowing his options to five schools.

After splitting time with St. Julien at the pivot as a sophomore, when he threw for 900 yards and 11 touchdowns, Bullock took sole control of the reins last year and piled up some impressive numbers, completing 57 percent of his passes for 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns and rushing for more than 400 yards and another seven TDs.

“You enjoy it at first but after a while you get to be tired of the recruiting,” said Bullock. “I guess that I’m ready for it to get over with so I can look forward to the season.”

Among the schools that talked to Bullock are Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Rice, Virginia, Arkansas and many others at the major and mid-major Football Bowl Subdivision level, formerly known as Division I. Bullock recently narrowed the list he was considering to UL-Lafayette, ULM, Tech, Tulane and Rice. He had taken visits to Louisiana-Lafayete and Rice.

“I would really like to find a school with really good academics,” said Bullock. “That’s something that definitely tops on the list.”

For the past two seasons, Catholic High has run a spread offense where the quarterback mostly takes the ball from the shotgun position. The Panthers plan to run the same offense this year.

It says a lot about Bullock’s ability that Tulane, which runs a pro-set formation with the quarterback taking the ball from under center, has told the CHS senior they would tweak the offense for him and run more spread sets if he comes there.

While Bullock would be more comfortable in a spread formation, he said he wouldn’t have a problem going back under center, which is the system he used when he learned the position beginning in seventh grade.

“I’ve become really used to the shotgun,” said Bullock, who looks to pass first in the CHS offense before he takes off running. “It would take a little while but I could get used to being back behind center. I’d do okay.”

While Bullock is more known for his offensive exploits, he’s also played in the defensive secondary just like one of his quarterback predecessors at CHS, Michael Desormeaux.

And while the CHS senior will see action at quarterback and may see some action at safety this year, he might become a true triple-threat athlete and do some kicking for the Panthers this year as well.

“I might have to do some field goal kicking and punting,” said Bullock.

Bullock’s early commitment is no surprise given his stated desire to finish the process so he can enjoy his senior season.

“Most of the team is back this year,” said Bullock. “We’re looking pretty good and we have a lot of experience so it should be better than last year.”

Catholic High coach Craig Brodie is impressed with his senior.

“He got a lot of experience as a sophomore and passed for almost 1,000 yards,” said Brodie. “He’s a third year starter and has great mechanics, a strong arm and is a leader on the team.

“He really is a special player. Someone did a great job of teaching him the mechanics of throwing at a young age. It’s something that he’s developed. He’s 6-foot-3, runs a 4.5 40 and has all the tools to play at the next level.”

Brodie said that Tulane offered Bullock a scholarship before Christmas but that he wanted to look into other options before committing.
