Iberia council to review procedures

BY HEATHER MILLER / THE DAILY IBERIAN

The Iberia Parish Coun-cil is scheduled to vote Wednesday night on an ordinance that would change the council’s procedures for adopting its liability insurance.

The proposal comes after some council members disputed the way Iberia Parish President Ernest Freyou recently re-searched and proposed the parish’s liability and wind insurance, and also for his lack of timeliness in bringing the proposed insurance rates before the council.

The ordinance would change the timeline for when the parish president must submit the proposals to give the Parish Council more time to review. The ordinance also would establish an advisory committee for choosing the parish’s insurance that will include two council members.

Councilman John Be-rard has said in the past that the Home Rule Charter calls for the process to begin four months before a decision is made, and that the information should be given to the council at least two months before the deadline for renewal.

Councilman Lloyd Brown proposed the ordinance, but has tabled it more than once since it was brought up. He said he would wait until the legal review of the ordinance was finished.

Assistant District Attor-ney Eric Duplantis, the council’s legal adviser, said the legal review is complete.

In other business, the council will vote on a resolution that amends the 2009 road construction fund budget for $200,000 for the parish to purchase drai-nage materials.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Iberia Parish Council chambers on the fourth floor of the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
