Racism in New Iberia

I'm a card carrying Republican. I supported Ron Paul in the election and believe in a very small government where individual liberties are valued much higher than collective comforts. I do not agree with what Obama is doing regarding government expansion and seemingly out of control spending.

Yet, I see article after article posted here blasting Obama in one way or another and without exception, all of them are myopic, short sighted diatribes playing into this us vs. them mentality using arguments that would apply equally well if not more so to Bush and Co. Such hypocrisy is also usually tainted with subtle racist implications that one only needs the slightest ability to read between the lines in order to notice. I don't think these people are doing this on purpose. It's simply how people grow up in New Iberia.

The thug culture is alive and thriving in New Iberia. Much more so than practically any other city in Acadiana. One only needs to realize that this culture isn't a racial phenomenon but an economic one. Poor people of all races become thugs. New Iberia has an inordinate amount of poor people. Yet, we are taught by our fathers and grandfathers, reinforced by generations of ignorance and hatred that the problem is skin color. This inherited racism comes out in these anti-Obama posts. People actually compare Obama to a crotch grabbing thug. There is no basis in reality for such a comparison. It is purely a result of this subtle racism that exists more prominently in New Iberia than anywhere else in Acadiana.

If you have no close friends of different races (people who eat meals at your home that you would trust babysitting your kids) then play it safe and assume you're going to come across racist, especially if you've lived in New Iberia all of your life. You may not realize it, but when you enter into political discourse that ignorance is going to come out and people will draw attention to it. Obama is a source of pride and patriotism for the majority of Americans regardless of his policies. When you attack such a symbol people are going to interpret it the same way you interpret flag burning. To criticize Obama correctly you must focus 100% on policies. Any mention or comparison to gangsta thugs is going to mark you an America hating ignoramus to everyone but the hate radio, Fox news crowd.

Get out of town occasionally; make new friends. There are wonderful people out there to meet of all races.

By calling someone black you are talking about their COLOR, not about the person they are inside. Thats what it is all about. Its about the way people treat other people. Treat people the way you would want to be treated. Dont judge a book by its cover. Only God in heaven has the right to Judge us, and its not because of color. He Created us. "

This name calling is only a method of bashing, in an attempt to make the opposing side back away so the culprit's viewpoint seems valid. Just because you have decided to welcome blacks into your life, does not make you an open-minded or intelligent person. It only makes you a person who decided to allow black people into your life. "

Sad to say, but it's human nature...it's been going on for thousands of years and millions are dieing still. By our own doing..we are all too stupid to get along...so we all suffer for it. Individuals will make a bigger difference. "

" Bunny, you are deluding yourself. The majority here think Obama a failure at best. Even his supporters are starting to question whether they made the right choice. The poster is right about one thing, there are a lot of poor people here. The problem is that for the most part it is a self inflicted lifestyle choice, and the City is an enabler. Unlike say Madison Parish, where there really is no opportunity, our poor are so largely because they first eschew education and then work, black and while alike. "

" There you go again. The famous race baiting. Believe what you may, race has nothing to do with this. A thug is exactly what he is. Open your eyes. He got where ge is by bullying his way up the ladder. Research how he won his past elections. Research who is friends and political supporters are. This label does not fit me and these comments won't shut me up. See how you feel in 4 years? "

" This is one of a very few intelligent posts ever on this site. No doubt you just went over a bunch of heads because Iberians live and breathe for a good racists post. Those posts always make it to the top ten....and they wonder why God won't let New Iberia prosper. "

" President Obama may be a source of pride and patriotism for some Americans that have not yet awakened, but I in no way can picture him as a president to have pride in or look up to as a patriot.
The Republicans should have had a better candidate than McCain. To me he was just the lesser of the two evils.
Condoleesa Rice would have been a much better choice. An African American and a woman to boot.
I'm white (actually peach) and my choice certainly doesn't spell racisim. "

" You are so full of it. With that statement you group everyone into one group - racism. Although I do see it here, it's not predominate. You read between the lines, give me a break. I can safely say I can't stand what Obama is doing and it has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with color but his policies. No lines to read between here, it’s flat out there. I loathe Obama policies, couldn't care less about his color/s "

    " Good post Wayfaring C.
    I disagree,however with a couple of points.
One, most of what I have witnessed here is blaring, obvious racism and full of hatred. Sometimes the only thing I can do is shake my head; words fail me
while trying to understand the hatred expressed by some people.
Two, I believe the negative Obama letters are written by the same person. I think he loves it when other people join in that same negative, song and dance.
I try, I try very hard to keep upbeat, but sometimes I cry for humanity "

How dare any WHITE person crit icize a BLACK man! I'm sorry I was brought up in this thugish city and was not as enlightened as The Wayfaring Cajun! Maybe you would be more comfortable in Vermont with the other progressive liberals! "
