School equipment stolen

Thieves struck twice last week, once at the new North Lewis Elementary school under construction and again at the nearby old school, vacant and scheduled for demolition.

Twelve new 32-inch flat screen televisions awaiting classroom installation were stolen from the new building the night of June 5 by unknown individuals. In addition to the burglary of the new North Lewis Elementary, the former elementary nearby was robbed of an unknown amount of remaining copper.

Superintendent Dale Henderson reported the criminal activity at Wednes-day night’s meeting.

Henderson noted that ADT security service alarms had been installed but had not yet been activated. The alarm system has been activated since the robbery, he said, a decision made after consulting with M.D. Descant, the project’s contractors.

“We’ve asked the Sheriff’s Office to increase patrols around that area,” Henderson said. “I just wish we would catch them.”

Assistant Superintendent Michael Judice said he is frustrated at what appears to be a recurring problem.

“It seems that every new school we open, prior to us getting the ADT system set in place, we get some kind of theft,” Judice said. The stolen equipment was intended for use by teachers in conjunction with computers in the classroom.

“They’re used to project the computer images on a larger screen, for all the kids, and so the entire classroom can see,” he said. “These aren’t small monitors. They’re large 32-inch flat screens. It’s a shame that someone would do that to the students who need that equipment and we have to have it ready before the school opens in the fall.”

Judice said the two incidents currently are being investigated. A team from the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the robberies and has agreed to increase patrols around the area, as well as have officers moving around at the construction site.

“There is still a possibility of hiring security in the building or right outside,” Judice said. “Mr. Hender-son’s still considering that.”

Dan LeBlanc, Iberia Parish School Board president, said the value of the stolen items hasn’t yet been determined, but the loss of the new equipment would have to be addressed.

“Those items would be the responsibility of the School Board,” LeBlanc said. “We have insurance for that sort of thing, but I’m sure we have a deductible to pay.”

“It’s a shame because here you’re trying to do something good, to get equipment into the school system and things like this happen,” he said.

" Have you noticed an obvious trend among the leftist posters? They go from name-calling to personal attacks when reality is pointed out to them.

They have no substantive arguments to back up their looney reasoning, so they attack and make personal slams against the rational people who are simply pointing out reality, but want to ignore and make excuses for the ongoing shooting circus "

To Former NISH parent: I understand what you are saying but why does everyone always want to blame the parents? Once a person reaches a certain age, it is up to them to make their own decisions whether right or wrong. It made sense to start with the construction crew because who else would know whether the alarms were on? Makes sense to start from the inside and work your way out on cases like these. "

Come on people, you might as well have posted a Sheriff's deputy on site the minute the televisions were brought into the building because a theft was inevitable! "

When you spit in the air it will fall back on your nose. Our great Sheriff Dept. has already caught the suspects and recovered some of the items stolen. Maybe you should change your view about our wonderful Sheriff and his officers. We know you are one of the sore losers whose friend did not get elected to sheriff. Get over it and get on the right side of the fence. Be an asset and don't be so critical of our great Sheriff and his great officers. Good job IPSD. "

I wrote about a month ago about an "open and shut" theft case, and I'm still waiting for the warrant to be issued...I guess it all depends on who you know etc. This should not be hard to solve, given the information I read in the article; but I bet it goes unsolved. Sad state of affairs in our parish! Time to get rid of the slackers! "

I can see it now...12 kids convoying through the streets of NI in the middle of the night with each a brand new 32 inch flat screen in tow!
Sorry for the sarcasm :) "

" I would just like to note that the brand name of most of the TV's was Sceptre. This brand, Sceptre, is not sold in local stores. Maybe this will aide in finding them. They were ALL engraved with the IPSB initials and numbered for inventory. If you have seen one of these, PLEASE call the police anonymously. You have no idea how much these are used daily by students. Teachers don't watch TV on them. They aren't even hooked up to television channels. They are for educational purposes only and bringing things to life makes recalling easier for students. "

If it was impossible, the items should have been stored under lock & key in a more secure location outside of the building under construction. It is understood the items were insured, but come on, a little caution would not hurt ! "

Do you really think the principal organized the theft of TVs from her own school. You are extremely deluded. I'm pretty sure the teachers were not allowed to take the TVs because school supplies like that are usually not allowed to leave school property. Instead of trying to perpertuate unfounded rumors, New Iberia should being trying to reduce the increasing crime within the city. New Iberia is become less a wonderful small town and more a crime ridden city. "

I hope someone is watching the local thrift shops for these items.

As for the possible culprits being bored students or constuction workers, I think it best not to accuse anyone until we have a real reason to do so. "

Which teachers asked specifically about the non-existent televisions, which are brand new and weren't on? Or was this older equipment? Too many New Iberians are willing to take too much gossip without proof, with an equal number too willing to anonymously egg them on. But then again, I satirically point out, maybe the school, the DI and even the city council were in on it, sharing profit on the 'loot'. "

How on earth would nobody see this? Really now !!!! Especially, since they mention that it has happened before in some of the other new schools. How many things need to be stolen before our officials figure this out? I'm sure some of the older schools, the ones with all the obsolete techonology, would have loved 12 flat screen televisions. "
