The city of New Iberia and the Iberia Industrial Development Foundation commissioned a study of area retail psychographics last year and the results were reported in The Daily Iberian in April.

Buxton, a Texas-based company that matches profiles of consumers and retailers, narrowed down a list of 150 retailers that could be interested in locating to Iberia Parish, to a core list of 15.

Hobby Lobby, Target, Olive Garden, T.J. Maxx and Old Navy were some that made the core list.

New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry and IDF President and CEO Mike Tarantino put the results of the study to work for the Teche Area when they attended the International Council of Shopping Centers in Las Vegas May 18 and Tuesday.

Tarantino said the trip was “very productive” and the beginning of building relationships with key people that will be necessary to bring new businesses to the Teche Area. The pair were able to present the Buxton findings to several retailers that made the core list.

“We had the right information and started the right relationships,” he said. “What’s key is to continue building on these relationships because a lot of retail expansion plans have been slowed down for ’09, but when retail picks back up nationally, we’ll have done the work so hopefully we’ll be at the top of their list.”

Attendance at the trade show reflected the retail expansion slow down Tarantino said. The show, normally attracts approximately 70,000 retailers, real estate professionals and developers but only drew a crowd of 30,000 this year.

Mayor Curry said while the Buxton study will be a useful tool to attract new businesses to the Teche Area, an area ripe for economic development she said, she stressed the opportunity of using the information to help existing businesses.

“We have arranged for them (Buxton) to come and do a public presentation so people will understand their process and also what information will be available to the public,” Curry said. “This will be a great tool for our businesses to use.”

Tarantino said the Buxton representative will likely come to New Iberia in the first half of June.

“Everyone who is interested will be invited to attend the ‘community conversation’,” Tarantino said.

Until then, anyone interested in looking through the Buxton study can call the IDF office at 367-0834 to make an appointment to view the findings. In the future, Tarantino said, he envisions a Web-based applications where all the Buxton findings will be available for the public to access.

" Yes, you state thta correctly regarding families going along on these trips. Correct, an entitlement of a vacation partially paid for by the tax payer dollars. "

" Yep, most of the wifes go, some do take their children. A few believe it's an entitlement; a deserving vacation on tax payers dollars. "

" I heard there are 9 council members that will be attending the NACO Convention in Nashville, Tennessee which equals $20,700. I wonder how many wives and family members will be enjoying this trip? "

" Oh yes, I am aware of that fact about the NACO Conference. Curious to see how many will be attending. Maybe it will be said at tonights meeting. Hey, it's only money. What about the raises they want to give to Dept, heads also. Sally and Kevin have already received raises this year. Must be nice, 2 raises in one year. The Human resourse person got about a $7g raise just about 3 years ago. The working people tried this year to get raises and the council cried. Pityful....Thanks "

" If you would ever like to collaborate on issues involving psychographics I would love to share my experiences with you. I have been told that I am an expert in this field for my ability to influence the buying behavior of retail customers through the use of photography. Literally thousands of dollars of goods are being purchased and consumed by this ability just north of Atlanta, Georgia. Recently I formed a company called “Snapshot In Time, Inc.” which provides customized business and photographic solutions beyond variable marketing & psychographics.

" Did ya know, the council will be passing a resolution Wednesday night to allocate $2,300.00 per person to go to the NACO Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. If all 14 members attend that is a whopping $32,000.00, compliments of the taxpayers' of Iberia Parish! "

Stop being so small minded and face the
facts New Iberia and surrounding areas
need change. Like your tax dollars
even come as high as other cities
that are way more productive. "

" If Target comes to New Iberia I think it will WIPE out KMart and Wal Mart. Target I find has better quality in alot of things. I would love to see a Target, Olive Garden and Chick fi-la. I think we need more restaurants espeically with all the hotels going up on Center Street. What do we have now 6 or 7? That's only on Center Street. "

" Of course the taxpayers paid for this trip. Well at least for the Mayor. IDF Foundation probably paid for Mike Tarentanio's trip. It comes out of their travel expense account they have allowed for the year. Amen for taxpayers! Just like the parish council where they went to Hawaii. They had many that went along with their wives but they claim to have paid wives way. But those rooms were paid for my the taxpayers. "

" I sure hope the taxpayers did not have to pay for this trip. What a waste. Those stores come to your towns anyway, they don't need help. "
