New Iberia Recycling Coordinator Geri Frede-rick said 63 people signed up for Wednesday’s event.
NISH Industrial Arts teacher Charles Williams said his students assembled the kits Tuesday, making it easier to apply them to the bins when there’s a line of cars waiting.

Iberia Parish President Ernest Freyou, who came to show support and watch the mechanics of the process, said the students have the process “down to a science.”
Two of those students are Gavin Dubois and Jed Schaubert, both seniors who have been helping out with the twice annual events for four years. Although they said they might not be able to complete the process with their eyes closed, it is pretty easy by now.
“I think it’s good (to help) elderly people,” said Schaubert.
One of the local residents they helped was Jerry Beard, who came with two bins — one for himself, and one for his 78-year-old mother.
“Sometimes I’m not there to take her stuff out,” he said. “She said, ‘Well, you’re a senior citizen, too. You can get one.’ ”
Beard said his mother recycles most everything she can.
“She does it more than I do,” he said. “I’m getting back into it.”
The wheels sure can’t hurt.
