There could be a Target, Olive Garden or J.C. Penny coming to Iberia Parish if Mike Tarantino and Mayor Hilda Curry are successful in recruiting retailers identified in a recently completed study to be a perfect fit for Iberia Parish.

The first comprehensive retail study ever done of Iberia Parish was commissioned by the Iberia Industrial Development Foundation and the city of New Iberia in October. Buxton, a Texas-based company that matches profiles of consumers and retailers, narrowed a list of 150 retailers that could be interested in locating to Iberia Parish to a core list of 15.

Retailers that made the list were: Hobby Lobby, Target, Olive Garden, T.J. Maxx, Old Navy, Johnny Carino’s, Cracker Barrel, American Eagle Outfitters, AMF (bowling alley), Applebees, Chick-Fil-A, Finish Line, J.C. Penny, JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts and Schlotzsky’s Deli.

Tarantino, president and CEO of the Iberia Industrial Development Foundation, and Curry will begin wooing the potential retailers in late May at the International Council of Shopping Centers in Las Vegas.

In addition to the list of 15, Buxton studied retail leakage and surplus areas in the parish. Tarantino said leakage refers to “the amount of our potential buying power that leaves our community,” and surplus is “the money we capture from consumers shopping in Iberia Parish stores from surrounding areas like Franklin and Abbeville.”

He said it’s important to use Buxton’s findings not only to lure new retailers and business to the parish, but also to help existing merchants do more.

“We don’t want in any way to diminish the business that our locals enjoy,” Curry said. “We want to do everything we can with the study to encourage more business for our local business owners and assist current businesses in growing and bringing in the products that the study has indicated to be the best ones for the community.”

Buxton found there is considerable leakage, meaning Iberia Parish residents travel to other communities to shop for computer hardware, software and supplies, audio equipment, musical instruments and supplies, electronics and home furnishings.

The study also found leakage in the full service restaurant sector. In fact, Buxton said Iberia Parish has the potential of $31.3 million in sales from full service restaurants based on the consumer behavior here. Currently, full service restaurants in the parish only hit $10 million in sales per year, giving more than $20 million in sales revenue to other communities.

“I was a little surprised that they said there was so much leakage in restaurants,” Curry said. “There is definitely a need for different types of restaurants in our community.”

The study also found more than $5 million in leaked sales in the family clothing sector, which Tarantino said was most likely department stores.

“Our existing merchants can use this information to adjust their inventories to better match what consumers are buying,” Tarantino said.

Tarantino and Curry are focusing their suggestions for potential retailer location to the Spanish Towne Center development.

Tarantino said many of the retailers on the list are moving away from the indoor mall location and more toward what he called a “lifestyle center.”

“Spanish Towne Center is the closest thing we have to a lifestyle center type of development and design,” Tarantino said.

He described the concept as an outdoor shopping center but not necessarily a strip mall, “more like an indoor mall turned inside out so all the retailers were facing outward.”

Tarantino and Curry plan on presenting the Buxton findings to the community in late May or early June.

“We desperately want local retailers to be able to utilize this information,” Tarantino said. “Our intention is to make this information open and accessible to everyone that wants to look at it. We will find the most effective way to get this out to everybody, which may end up being some sort of Web-based application.”

Despite bad news on the retail front making national headlines, Tarantino said he is confident this is a good time to begin building relationships with retailers and showing them Iberia Parish is a “pocket of prosperity” they should consider.

" Are you kidding me? Have you ever been to New Iberia or have you ever shopped in New Iberia? Sales clerks that work the retail establishments in the City of New Iberia are so down-right rude and ugly to customers, it's unbelievable! I've never seen anything like it. Let one of the big name chains get wind of this established customer service treatment and see how fast they want to tap into your employment source. Yeah, right. That'll happen. "

" GREAT NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New Ibeia needs more nationally name brand stores and restaurants to make a better economy for all our citizens and also New Iberia will draw visitors from nearby neighboring parishes to come here and shop and eat, remember we have great assets here and we just need to develop this area and then we can create a very neat town with lots of employment opportuniites, there are many people, who would make great employees being that they are given the opportunity to do so, and night classes are a great idea to train new employees "

" Big stores would be nice. However, are we supporting the small retailers in New Iberia now? If you want that friendly hometown service, you better stick with the smaller hometown stores like This N That Gifts on Center Street, Backstage on Admiral Doyle, Doggie Boutique, on Admiral Doyle, our main street stores, etc. These are the ones who support our community when there is a need. "

It would be a losing proposition for them and they are not in the business of losing money. Forget about it honey, ain't gonna happen! "

The success of Chili's, Ruby Tuesday's, and the addition of more hotels has increased tourism tenfold and has allowed travelers a comfortable place to stop along the way. Just by having people stop intrigues them to go a little further into the city. It has done that for me. What a lovely place to call home. "

I try to support the new one in New Iberia, but because of limited quilting supplies am not always able to do so. I live in Franklin but belong to a quilting club in New Iberia . Since I am there often, I would do my shopping for quilting and fabric there if avalabile. "

Maybe you should re-read my post - I said until recently when a small quilt shop opened in New Iberia and Morgan City. I have and do support Emily's Closet. However, we still need a store like Jo-Ann's which has a much fuller line of products. If a person is driving from Franklin to buy mats, etc. they have to be able to buy everything they need - or they have to buy it online. "

We have a quaint store by the name of Emily's Closet, next to Sacred Heart Church and across from Boutte's Wholesale Auto Center. I myself went in search of felt for my daughter and hit the jackpot! Please support our local fabric shop. "

What exactly do you think that is on Ambassador Caffery next to the river RIGHT SMACK IN THE MIDDLE of all the shopping on the south side of Lafayette? Within yards, of the most valuable property in South Louisiana? It ain't the sewer plant, honey, it's the uneducated poverty lifestyle populace, and the lack of an educated and motivated workforce. The average income in Lafayette is 50% higher than our little welfare haven. "

How can all of these places open in New Iberia when we can't get quality employees to fill the positions - this is why customer service is so bad! Who wants to eat somewhere when the cell phone is more important or the food is not good or the tables have not been cleared until we can get quality employees it is hard!! "

" It would be good to see these stores in New Iberia. I currently live in California and we partically have most of the stores/restaurants. When I come to visit New Iberia the only major store to shop from is WalMart. Duh! I am sure that I would need to go to Lafayette for some of the other stores; however, that is a major inconvenience. Further, the sales tax revenue would provide for needed parish services. "

" As much as I like the idea of new food places in NI, I would rather see Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, or JC Penney come to our town. What about a place that carries more maternity clothes or items for pregnant women. It would be great to see a Toys R Us/Babies R Us here too! I agree no more chinese restaurants unless they are as good as Lotus Gardens in Lafayette. "

Sorry to say that you are the one that needs to think out of the box. If our mayor would not have put the cesspool right in the middle of the prime development area it would already have been done and we would be having this ridiculous conversation! So, it's not negetive but the truth!! "

This includes fast food, too. Check out the fast food places in NI. When you pull up to the window you have to listen to their conversations including cursing. I would hope that this project actually keeps the trash away...workers and consumers. "

Mrs. S is correct that there has not been a place to purchase these items In St. Mary, Iberia and other surrounding parishes sinces Hancock's left New Ibera until recently when a small quilt shop opened in New Iberia and Morgan City. Since Hancock's closed and Walmart stopped selling fabric, myself and many other women in these parishes do all of their shopping in Lafayette since we have to go there for fabric anyway. Talk about leakage... "

" This would be great for New Iberia, however some pointers should be given to retailers on what to look for in potential employees. Not all, but some don't appear to want to do business. You can't treat people poorly and expect to get repeat business. You also can't have a store that looks like it's been robbed. "
