New Iberia TEA party fails to live up to stated objectives

Published/Last Modified on Monday, April 20, 2009 3:18 PM CDT

The more I thought about the concept of a New Iberia TEA (Taxed Enough Already) party, the more I became excited about its potential. The idea of citizens coming together regardless of political and religious affiliation to hold their elected public officials accountable for the perceived out-of-control Washington spending was nothing short of inspiring.

John Stevenson and Lynn Dartez, co-organizers of the New Iberia event, told me before the TEA party that the April 15 gathering would be a nonpolitical party based rally holding all politicians accountable. In a story that ran April 12 in The Daily Iberian, Dartez said “This is not about political parties. It’s about the citizens of New Iberia getting together ... concerned citizens getting together with equally minded citizens.”

Unfortunately, that was not the case Wednesday. What ended up happening played much like a far right-wing political rally with one speaker disrespecting the president of the United States and two different global religions all in one fell swoop by describing President Barack Obama as “a Muslim wannabe.” The only thing sadder than the statement was that it drew applause.

For more than an hour, speaker after speaker blamed the country’s current $11 trillion debt on Obama, without even the slightest mention of George W. Bush. In fact, when all the main speakers were done, the only other president mentioned by name in a disparaging manner besides Obama was that of Bill Clinton.

No one should argue the point that blame for our current economic mess rests with both parties. Whether Democrat or Republican, everyone in this country feels the burden of the economic crunch. To sit on the City Hall lawn and hear speaker after speaker blame 100 percent of the problems on a president who has been in office for less than four months, without even the slightest mention of the previous administration’s eight years, was disheartening.

My sense from Wednesday’s TEA party was the crowd in attendance was actually there for a public reckoning with all Washington officials (Democrat and Republican) and simply got caught up in listening to a loud minority of Republican backers turn the event into a political witch hunt.

The only thing as pitiful as a Republican blaming all the country’s ills on Democrats is a Democrat doing the same thing with Republicans.

Almost 200 people showed up at City Hall in the middle of a weekday because they are frustrated. They are angry that they’ve worked their whole life only to face an uncertain future and mounting unemployment.

If used for positive change, that frustration can be a wonderful tool for success. Our current elected leaders are charged with formulating the plan to pull this country out of turmoil. Unfortunately, the resulting battlefield has created plenty to fear.

If we use that fear to paint one party or the other as evil then nothing can be accomplished because it stops being a fight for recovery, and starts being a fight for power.

Those who attended the TEA party last week want recovery. Those speakers who used the pulpit to push a power-based agenda through hate mongering failed the call of those people.

Government has been advancing down the trail of over taxing and over spending . Now that the tipping point has been reached the average AMERICAN has now become Un- silent . Politicians are on our payroll now is the time to peacefully acknowledge it is TEA TIME "

I'm not a D or R. D and R's don't represent me. I have no political home. But I do know that my household wouldn't borrow $ from someone who has a long history of trying to destroy us. I do know that I wouldn't steal an A away from one child, so that another child could get a C. "

It frosts me when they call the president the most powerful person in the world. Where does he get that power? He is a REPRESENTATIVE of the most powerful PEOPLE on earth. We are going down the drain. BUT WE pulled the plug ourselves and only the people can put the plug back in by electing representatives that know who they work for and where they get their check. "

I don't agree that we spend precious time and resources that we don't have, on trying to prosecute the crooks that just left office; the ones that took the constitution and interpreted it to suit their means; the ones that made their friends and families rich on a mis-guided war! Also, whether you like it or not, it's not Obama, it's President Obama, thank you very much! "

" So, Cajunator, unless we agree with YOUR assessment of the President that, "HE'S SCREWING UP FROM DAY ONE!", we are not being objective? Well, I object to your assessment. Since day one, he has tried to clean up the mess left to him by the last administration! I personally wish that Bush had had to stay and clean up his own mess; wonder where that would have landed us? Based on the last 8 years, I would guess we would be in worst shape as he continued to fight a needless war spending trillions of dollars per month! "

That's not the CHANGE and HOPE that will keep us free. To chose what is right ! "

Well that's because HE'S SCREWING UP FROM DAY ONE! Then you said that people weren't as critical of Bush right away.I am telling you the liberals started with their conspiracies and hate mongering even before the first day of his first term. YES. HE RAN AGAINST GORE HIS FIRST TERM.Now, I'm done with talking to brick walls.I won't respond to you anymore, unless you want to discuss it face to face. "

" Cajunator: And that was the begining of GWB second term and definately the down fall of this great country. People were at that point fed up with the way things were going and tried to have an honest election. Only God knows the true outcome of that election. Regardless Bush was re-elected and things went down hill from that point. As I said people started complaining about our President on day one. You bring up the election between Gore and Bush, what about the election in Minnesota between Franken and Coleman. Why can't Coleman accept the results. "

Remember, they tried to make us all believe that people are so stupid, that they were incapable of punching a hole in a card under the correct name, therefore Al Gore's lawyers were needed to determine who people "REALLY" meant to vote for.And the"DIMPLED CHAD","PREGNANT CHAD",and"HANGING CHAD",became the magical crystal ball they would use to "read the voter's minds".Millions of dollars,3 recounts, and 8 years later...you bring up witch hunts? That's just funny! Now, I would be right at home if that was the case (no pun intended). It's not going to be a long four years for me. I support the President. "

When FAUX news and its correspondents were revving up these TEA parties? Anyone listenong to FOX know they spend all day trying to find some negative to report about the President? I have friends in New Iberia that report the same thing as Mr. Hemelt. The problem seems to be that the truth hurts? Why would news coverage have to bleep some of the comments? "

On one of the reputable news stations, they had to bleep out some of the comments made by those attending. It did become a witch hunt. George Bush had two terms in office. I believe that in his second term is when people began to be critical of him and at the end he was totally unpopular. Mr. Obama has been in office such a short time, yet criticism of him began immediately "

I am saddened but not surprised at your column. I am a regular reader of the newspaper and do not remember you coming to the defense of President Bush when he was called a liar by the "far Left". Where was your outrage then? I would not have applauded any criticism of the current president if I would have been at the rally, so you are correct on that subject. However the double standard that seems to be out there today is unbelievable. I do feel we are heading down a ill-advised road. "
