The Catholic High Panthers, fresh off the District 6-3A title, lead a group of five Teche Area teams that qualified for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs for Classes 4A through C that were announced Tuesday.

Class 5A playoff seedings will not be determined until next Tuesday.

CHS drew the fifth seed in Class 3A and will play host to 28th seed Rayville (7-17) in a first round game Friday at 4 p.m.

“We’re going to play one game at a time like we did in district,” said CHS (19-6-1) coach David Jordan. “The district we played in was tough and I think the kids did a good job of staying focused and playing one game at time, especially with how many games we played.

“It doesn’t really matter it you win ugly now, in the state of Louisiana it’s one and done. So we’re going to focus on every team and we can’t get to Parkview (Baptist) unless we take care of the first round.”

A little incentive for the Panthers this year is the fact that the Class 3A state tournament will be held at Acadian Park.

“There’s no doubt (that’s incentive),” said Jordan. “But I like to believe that when we played in Baton Rouge we were still the home team. When we played in Crowley in 2006, we had the best fans and it’s going to be a huge exclamation point if we can play in the tournament this year. They’ll be turning people away. It’ll be packed.”

The only other Teche Area team to play host to first round game will be Hanson, the 14th seed in Class A, playing Block, the 19th seed.

Three other area teams will hit the road for the first round.

In Class 2A, 30th seed Loreauville (9-12) will travel to Denham Springs and play No. 3 seed St. Thomas Aquinas (24-6).

In Class A, 21st seed Delcambre (14-10) will travel to No. 12 seed LaSalle (17-9) for a 5 p.m. Thursday game.

“The scouting report on LaSalle shows two good pitchers, good catcher and pretty solid defense,” said DHS coach Johnny Trangmar. “They’re so-so on hitting but if you have good pitching and defense you can win a lot of games.”

Trangmar thought Delcambre’s season went well.

“It went like I thought it would,” said Trangmar. “I knew we’d have trouble with VC (Vermilion Catholic) and Hanson but I figured we could beat Gueydan and CC (Central Catholic).

“Last year we were fourth place and a wild-card, this year we were third place. Hopefully we’ll keep building up and reach the pinnacle of our district. I’m just excited to be taking a bus ride and go up and have some fun and you never know about the game of baseball.”

In Class B, ESA (8-11) drew the 25th seed and will travel to No. 5 Stanley (18-9).

The Class 5A regular season ends this weekend and playoff pairings for that class will be announced next week.
