Landrieu wants more offshore drilling

As alternative energy and independence from foreign oil become a frontline for the White House administration, Louisiana has to show the world that offshore drilling and protecting coastlines can be done simultaneously, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu said during a visit to The Bayou Companies.

Landrieu, D-New Orleans, stopped by the deep-water pipe coating, insulation and prefabrication company at the Port of Iberia Wednesday afternoon as one of four visits to Acadiana oil and gas companies.

She is scheduled to testify before Congress today to support lifting the bans on more offshore drilling, and said touring local facilities and speaking with industry leaders will help her in her fight against President Barack Obama’s proposed increase in taxes on the oil and gas industry.

“I’ve got to highlight these companies and their tremendous advances and importance in this industry,” Landrieu said. “It’s like someone said earlier today, ‘We’ve got to tell the president that you don’t start building the bridge to the future by burning the bridge.’ That’s what these taxes would do.”

The Bayou Companies Director of Business Development David Boulet said in his presentation to Landrieu that the Gulf of Mexico is home to the deepest oil development in the world, and the proposed taxes, specifically on imported crude oil, would be a “detriment” to the company.

The company, which operates on 280 acres at the port, was recently acquired by Insituform Technologies out of St. Louis, Boulet said.

“Oil companies have choices as to where they bring their crude, and choices as to where they invest their dollars,” Boulet said.

Sensitivity to environmental concerns has become more prevalent in recent years, Boulet said, adding that it is crucial for Landrieu and others to share the truth about concerns like pipeline leakage.

“The scare tactics out there (on environmental concerns) are hurting us,” Boulet said. “There are more leaks out of the ground naturally than in the industry, and things like that need to come out.”

Boulet told Landrieu higher education programs on industry technologies like welding engineering and incident mitigation will be necessary for oil and gas to move toward foreign independence and alternative energy.

With a state having such large oil, gas and boating industry ties, Boulet said he still “scratches his head” on why there is not a single welding engineering program at any Louisiana university.

“People are under intense pressure to protect our coast and rising sealines,” Landrieu said. “We can do both at the same time. We have to show people it can be done because we have the best technology in the world. Each side’s got to give a little and take a little.”

" We need a diversified economy!! The oil companies already have enough leased lands on which they are not drilling on. We had more active rigs before Bush! Quit being so insular and parochial Louisiana !! Your parochialism is largely why businesses don't want to come here!! Who wants to relocate to a state that mostly caters to the oil industry but big oil?!! Mary Landrieu wants more drilling because that means more oil and gas revenue for Louisiana--but it will only get stolen by our Louisiana politicians anyway just like Leander Perez did. "

I am not the reason your husband has no job.

That reason is probably due to the fact that big oil fatcats have all the money and power.

.....unless one already has the money.

Environmental technologies and practicies are ussually more labor intensive, which creates more jobs.

" I also hate the idea of using conventional agricultrual practicies to grow fuel. The best energy we can use is the energy which is already here. Energy which is already assimilated, embedded into a useable form. Most, if not all, of our wastes are pure energy. Think about it.

There is fuel all around us, but I think the best thing we can do is not drive obnoxiously big trucks with big tires. People that do drive those vehicles ussually have some serious issues with their manhood.

If we rely on corn for fuel, that means that food prices will skyrocket. It's just not the answer. And we are going to use oil, I'd prefer for it not to be foreign.

It's because of people like you that my husband got laid off! "

There are plenta of other resources right around us ready to be exploited as well, but there is no reason we have to have such a wasteful and inefficient society. There is no reason that we must destroy the very thing which supports us and our culture. "

" I feel, like many Acadians should, that oil and gas activities have played a large role in the deterioration of our environment. In Louisiana especially, this cost has come in the form of coastal wetland loss from the alterations we have made to the natural hydrology in the form of navigation canals and levees. We have selectively managed our water resources for commerce and development, forgetting that deltaic systems have built our state. The loss of coastal wetlands we rely on to protect us from hurricanes, provide fishery industries, and serve as the basis of Cajun culture "

Most who acquire an education leave, we are the most vulnerable to sea-level rise and we have completely disconnected the natural processes that continuously feed our coastal areas. What I am saying is that we are at a turning point. We have to fix these problems by rethinking what we are doing. "

She voted for the "blueprint" budget, which taxes Oil & Gas! And where is the press to press her on the truth??? She is a true blood liberial on all matters. She doesn't care about us back home, she just got re-elected! You people who support/vote for her, congrats! hope you are happy with her! "

Louisiana is sinking and we have global warming, sealevel rise and realitive sea level rise (subsidence + sea level rise).

The longer we refuse to change our energy infrastructure and economic basis, the more vulnerable we become.

That is science not opinion. "

She either has permission from Harry Reid to cast a dissenting vote on oil & gas, or she is holding out to get top dollar for her vote.
