Two former Westgate athletic standouts, Jomaine Vital and Freddy Wright, have signed national letters of intent with Louisiana College in Pineville

Wright, who graduated in 2004, and Vital, who graduated in 2005, were at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Arkansas, where both will receive their associate degrees in May, then transfer to Louisiana College for the upcoming football season.

Both were recruited to Arkansas Baptist by former Jeanerette coach and current ABC defensive coach Ananias Johnson.

“We hooked up with Coach through a friend,” said Wright. “We decided that we still wanted to play football and we had a chance to go to California to play but we wanted to find someplace closer to play and the Good Lord blessed us to get in touch with Coach Johnson and he brought us to Arkansas.”

Wright played tight end at Arkansas Baptist and Vital was a linebacker.

Both are expected to play the same positions at Louisiana College.

Johnson made the original contact with Louisiana College on behalf of the players, who visited Pineville and immediately were a hit with the coaching staff. The two signed on March 4.

“We liked everything with the program and the school and we both decided that we wanted to sign there,” said Vital. “It kept us close to home where our family and friends can come and see us play.”

Both are expected to start this coming football season as juniors.

“Coach Dunn (Louisiana College head coach Dennis Dunn) told them to expect to come in and start right away,” said Johnson. “They made a great package together.”

Wright wants to study kinesiology with an eye of getting into coaching later on while Vital will study human services and child welfare.

“I’m very pleased with the decision to go to Louisiana College,” said Vital.
