More than three months still separate Akeem Evans from his first-degree murder trial, but the 18-year-old New Iberian already has been convicted of a crime he committed behind bars.

Evans, who was indicted last year in the shooting death of gun store owner Sidney Long Jr., pleaded guilty last month to battery on an Iberia Parish Correctional Center employee.

The charge stemmed from a December disturbance in which Evans “grabbed and pulled” Diane Isaac’s hair from behind. Isaac is a jail employee who was taking a head count in E pod, court documents show.

When Evans was taken to court on the matter Feb. 19, he told a 16th Judicial District Judge he did not want a lawyer and was sentenced to serve three months, though he was granted credit for time served.

Evans, charged with shooting Long multiple times while robbing the 72-year-old man in his Center Street gun store in May, is being held without bond because he is charged with a capital offense.

The battery charge marks the second additional offense Evans has accrued since he was arrested last summer.

Shortly after his May arrest, Evans reportedly wriggled out of his handcuffs while awaiting transfer in police custody.

His escape prompted a lengthy manhunt in which the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office called for law enforcement assistance from at least two neighboring parishes.

Evans is one of three men charged in Long’s death.

Easton Francisco, 22, also is charged with shooting Long during the robbery.

Rickey Paul, 21, is facing accessory after the fact charges for reportedly driving Evans and Francisco to safety shortly after the shooting.

Paul is free on bond while Evans and Francisco are awaiting murder trials in June.

I tried to post to you but I am having difficulty making it past the "thought police" in the DI.

If you did NOT file a complaint with LE on your claim "Long pointed a gun at my nephew and I in that same Pawn Shop, unprovoked", then don't open your mouth now! IT IS purely hearsay, and is NOT admissible!
You seem to be pushing hate, but you're late with the rhetoric! "

" Let me get something perfectly clear: In order to purchase a handgun you must be 21, have LA residence and pass a background check by the Feds. A shotgun is 18. So I know for fact my father never sold to a minor. As for the facts of the murder and robbery you will all have to wait for the trials.
To Irie, Dad never hid the fact that he was armed, he showed his gun to anyone who inquired. I know this info to be fact, I am a licensed gun dealer. "

    " To Real Irie
Long never ignored people who asked if he carried a gun. You probably asked!
I shopped with him for years, he always made it clear about the robbery at anoither gun store, how the guy was shot, if he had a gun on his person he could have defended himself.
Obviously you took his carrying a gun in the wrong direction. I presume he never had a chance against these thugs.
If I recall correctly he even had a sign posted that said forget the dog beware of the owner! "

Did he know these youngster and have he done business with them before? Look Melissa you know the facts and you should deal with those facts! He will get his judgement day, but remember you are NOT the judge. Let God take care of him like he is caring for your dad. "

" No one except the parties involved knows what really went on in that Pawn Shop. Was it really unprovoked? Long pointed a gun at my nephew and I in that same Pawn Shop, unprovoked. If we would have produced a firearm, aimed, fired and killed Long back then, you good people would have felt the same way about us. We were not thugs nor thieves. You see life has karma. Beware how you treat people. What you set in motion will return. No person deserves unjust death, but only God can judge. Were you there? "

Did I just write that? Oh, I'm sorry. I must be daydreaming again! "

To the Long family, his time is coming just hold your heads high and be proud of the way you are conducting yourself regarding with horrible situation. God Bless the Long family! "

I believe this will be added to his "description" when he goes for his murder trial. Maybe it's just another nail for his coffin!
As for the DI, shame on all of you for NOT letting the family of Mr. Sidney know that a story about one of his acussed murderers was going to be printed! What a way to find out, pick-up the paper,-and-there-it-is! "

Proper writing would not have included Paul or Francisco, or the details of the murder. Just taking up space to sell rags! It is hard enough to face daily life without it being put in our face on a regular basis! "

To What: I agree I would want in the paper so that everyone can see how this person lives his life. And see that he belongs in jail. "

He's hopefully going to get his fair trial by a jury of peers and a sentence that matches his crime. On that note, had this person killed one of my family members, I'd WANT to see every incident in the paper so everyone can see the complete disrespect this young punk has for society and its laws !!
