Eight Teche Area teams earned spots in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association boys’ basketball playoffs this week, and two earned high enough seeds to host first-round games.

The brackets were released Wednesday by the LHSAA. First-round games must be played by Friday.

The District 4-5A champion Westgate Tigers (24-7) drew the No. 5 seed in 5A and will face a familiar foe, district rival Lafayette High (16-14), who drew the No. 28 seed. LHS is the defending 5A state champion.

Game time is Friday at 7 p.m. at the Westgate Coliseum.

The only other Teche Area team with a first-round home game is District 8-B champion Centerville (18-16), which drew the 13th seed in Class B and will play host to No. 20 seed Stanley (13-15). The visiting Panthers finished in a tie for second place in District 4-B with Florien.

According the Centerville coach Randy Bergeron, the game will be today at 6 p.m.

The remaining teams that made the playoffs are all on the road in the first round.

Catholic High (16-15), which finished second in District 6-3A, drew the 23rd seed in Class 3A and will travel to No. 10 seed Albany (26-8), which was District 10-3A co-champion with Bogalusa.

District 7-C champion Assembly Christian (23-14) drew the No. 17 seed in Class C and will travel to No. 16 seed Starks (18-15), which finished tied for first in District 8-C with Johnson Bayou. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. Friday.

In Class 4A, St. Martinville Senior High (18-13), which finished fourth in District 5-4A, drew the 24th seed and will travel to Slidell to face No. 9 seed Salmen (26-2), the champions of District 9-4A.

In Class 3A, both West St. Mary and Franklin Senior High, which finished tied with each other for third in District 7-3A, qualified for postseason play.

The Hornets (18-15) drew the No. 22 seed and will travel to Opelousas to face No. 11 seed Northwest (20-10), the champions of District 5-3A, while the Wolfpack (16-15) drew the No. 28 seed and will travel to Monroe to face No. 5 seed Wossman (19-7), the second place team from District 1-3A.

Finally in Class B, ESA (12-22), which finished in fifth place in District 7-B, drew the No. 25 seed and will face off against District 7-B rival Lacassine (24-16), which finished as district runner-up to Midland.

One team on the outside looking in is Jeanerette Senior High.

The Tigers (15-18) finished in four-way tie for first place in District 7-2A, but lost a district playoff game to Donaldsonville Monday night at Port Allen. The result was that JSH did not have enough power points to rank as one of the top 32 teams in Class 2A and did not make the playoffs. The other three teams involved in the tie, St. John of Plaquemine (31st seed), Livonia (26th seed) and Donaldsonville (21st seed), all qualified for the playoffs in Class 2A.
