According to State Police, drugs are suspected to have played a part in the crash, and the driver, a 16-year-old girl from Abbeville, was cited for driving while intoxicated, careless operation and vehicular homicide. State Police did not release the name of the driver because she is a minor.

Timothy Stokes, 17, of Abbeville was one of the other two passengers. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. A 16-year-old girl from Delcambre, whose name State Police did not release also because of her age, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Lafayette General Medical Center.

The crash occurred around 10:45 p.m. Friday as the four teens were traveling northbound on Louisiana 339. After traveling off the road “for reasons still under investigation,” the vehicle ramped up the culvert, struck a tree and overturned on the shoulder of the road.

State Police only released Stokes’ name as the other passengers are juveniles.
