Fighting Obesity

New Iberia resident Catherine Wilson is 46 years old and trapped, but her prison is not one with bars.

Wilson’s prison is her obesity.

Her health problems are myriad, and many of them are caused, or worsened, by her excessive weight.

She needs knee surgery, she said, but could not do it because of her weight. She has high blood pressure, high cholesterol and she is diabetic.

She does not know how much she weighs, and said she does not have any response for what she weighed most recently. She believes the weight gain might be hormonal, as it started after she had a hysterectomy five years ago. She said she eats the same things she always did.

Wilson said she struggled some with her weight for a long time. Before her health declined so drastically, she said she always kept active, doing housekeeping for her job, walking and going to church regularly.

Now she is unable to leave her house, where she lives with her mother and her brother.

Eva Lewis is Wilson’s friend, the mother of a girl the same age as Wilson, a neighbor and is a Congregations Organizing People for Equality volunteer. Lewis has helped drive Wilson to doctors appointments for the past year — until she got so big she was unable to bend her legs to get into the car. She is also now afraid of falling.

“It makes you weaker, not being able to get around,” said Wilson. “It’s scary.”

One of the worst things is being unable to go to church, she said.

“When I stopped going (to church), it was like everything stopped,” Wilson said.

Nothing but an ambulance is equipped for someone of Wilson’s size. She is now unable to visit even her doctors.

She is cared for largely by her mother, Mary Lee Wilson, and Lewis.

“We’re trying to get any type of help (for Wilson),” said Lewis. “Medicaid only pays for so much.”

Lewis has been searching for a place that will take Wilson in and give her rehabilitation, counseling and maybe the doctor’s recommended gastric bypass surgery, and will “help her get back on her feet” in more ways than one, but has so far been unable to find one. Most, she said, don’t accept Medicaid.

“This is it,” said Lewis. “We’re up against a rock and a hard place.

“I was there when she was born ... and I’m seeing the decline, and it’s daily.”

" I have Just to let you know Mrs. Wilson has passed. I as being part of the medical profession knows that not all obesity comes from overeating and eating improperly but some is attributed to medical conditions. This lady had conditions from childhood!!!!! Just know that we all have to go through things, you may be in her shoes one day and just like she died, death will visit everyone's families even yours. I hope you are a three year old child and not an adult to speak such stupidity!!! "

This is serious and I pray the lord will open doors and windows to pour out blessings and bring people with loving and caring hearts to her side.
She can use friends as well as support.
There are people out there that can help.financialy and spiritualy.
we all can make a big difference in her life.

" I agree with those that say that it is not a quick fix, I have had the surgery. It is a whole lifestyle change. The surgery just helps you to be able to control and to change your eating habits. You have to really be ready to change you lifestyle. If you arent willing to change it isnt going to work. "

" There was a woman last year that had gastric bypass, then went out and ate a bunch of fried chicken. She ruptured the small stomach pouch, became septic, and died. It's not a quick fix. One must quit eating as much. "

" Thank you for compassionately realizing that Catherine is a person with feelinigs. Sometimes advice can be constructive criticism which may help someone to be motivated instead of harsh criticism which may overwhelm and hurt someone. I wrote the 2 "To Catherine" posts yesterday after reading the post from "shame on you". I lost some weight back in 1995, but have gained a lot of weight in the last 5 yrs. partly due to medical conditions and partly due to stress eating. When I read Catherine's story I was motivated to try harder to lose weight. Bless. You "

" I am very overweight also, partly due to medical reasons, and partly to poor food choices & portions, and lack of excercise. Believe me, I know losing weight is easier said than done, but you've inspired me to try harder. You may turn to food, and loved ones probably give you foods you like to make you happy, but you & they, will need to choose your foods differently now, whether you have gastric surgery or not. Try eating healthy vegetables, chicken, fish, & fresh fruits, and drink WATER all day. Go-light-on-the-rice-and-pasta. I'm Praying. "

" Gastric bypass surgery or not, your Gynocologist may help pinpoint what has added to your weight gain following your hysterectomy. Your Dr. may want to evaluate you for depression, test thyroid and other hormone levels, or refer you for a sleep apnea study. Any of those could possibly cause you to gain weight, and make losing it more difficult. If problems exist and are sucessfully treated, it might help you to lose weight and feel better. See your Dr.'s, if Medicaid won't pay for an ambulance, ride in the back of a suburban. God Bless. "

Shame on you wrote on Jan 28, 2009 2:45 PM:

" You stated your "health" got worse after a hysterectomy. Meaning you ate more?? Obviously your health isnt so bad to make you NOT eat ?!?!? And there are doctors that will accept medicaid for bypass if MEDICALLY needed. If you are just eating too much and cant control yourself, they wont do surgery as it will not work. "

" RDLDN No you do not have to be a Registered Dietician to give diet advice. Do you want her to come to you that you make money? Common sense tells you that if anyone goes under the knife(Gastric Bypass) to lose weight they are looking for ways to keep it off. Of course your eating habits has to change, if no one does not change, then what is the point of having the surgery. Catherine, please make sure your Glucose is under control before having the surgery. I pray for speedy answers to our prayers. Be Blessed!!!! "

RDLDN wrote on Jan 28, 2009 9:18 AM:

" Maybe Ms. Lewis' doctors can refer her to a registered dietitian who could help her with an individualized meal plan to help her lose weight and make goals for succesful weight loss. Dietitians are covered by medicaid, medicare and insurance or you can pay out of your pocket. Gastric bypass is a answer to help someone but you have to make lifestyle changes. Once you have the surgery you still can't eat everything you want. Please don't give diet advice unless you are a RD!!! "

" I was a classmate of Catherine, I remember how sweet of a person she was/is. Cat I hope you have the options to read these comments. Hang in there and know that with God nothing is impossible, He can and will make a way out of no way. DO NOT let anyone or the devil deceive you. I believe in my heart HELP is on it's way. Just hold on. Gastric bypass can and will help. People sometimes do not understand yes over eating puts on weight, but so does having certain thyroid problems, etc. "

" When Ms. Lewis began gaining weight, she should have reduced her calorie intake at that time. Sitting on the side of her bed looking bewildered will gain sympathy. However, if Ms. Lewis really, really, really made an effort, she could start loosing weight. It takes one step/one less fattening food at a time. Think about the foods you are indulging? Yeast, caffiene, sugary, beef, pork, starch products? toss them and start eating raw vegetables, green salads with mimum salad dressing, drink water... a gallon jug a day. think and accomplish. "

" Cat if you try drinking water before each meal you will fill up on the water and won't want to eat as much, also try not to eat after 6:00 pm that will help also. You can try just lifting your legs while sitting on the side of the bed that can start you on your exercise.I say a little something is better than nothing. Try it ,it wont hurt you "

" As you can tell by my nickname I was overweight at one time also, I weighed 552lbs. and thought surgery was the answer too. but it wasn't easy. Yea I lost a few hundred pounds but by the diet i follow I realize I could have done it without the surgery. I guess my whole point is you have to diet and excerise no matter what,Mrs. Wilson just start off slowly and diet and excersie, you can pull through this without surgery. "

ME wrote on Jan 27, 2009 11:06 AM:

" All things are possible Ms Catherine and I think with diet and excercise, you can lose all the weight on your own. Start off with a few simple diet changes and short walks around the house. Your endurance will gradually increase and you'll feel wonderful! Even though gastric bypass is an option, they require you to lose weight on your own before the surgery. It may take some time to do it on your own but the end result is priceless! Wish you all the luck in the world! "

" I want to apologize if I sounded harsh. I also struggle with my weight but I am trying to address it. So far today I have drank a weight loss shake and done 15 minutes of aerobics. I will walk 2.5 miles tonight and my goal is to do 20 more minutes of aerobics later today. People have to step up take responsibility. Taxpayers can not continue to bail everyone out. There are many other worthwhile causes in this city that deserve our help. Causes that can not control their circumstances. "

Mom wrote on Jan 27, 2009 7:29 AM:

" Gastric Bypass is only a quick fix. You have to be able to make life style changes or the weight will come back on. I agree with Robocop. This is what is wrong with America. People need to take responsibility for their own lives. Next will this paper feature a homeless man that only needs a bed? Come on! This did not happen overnight and now the taxpayers will have to foot the bill to repair the damage she has done to herself. Maybe our new "President" can offer some help. "

The staff is great as well and they make you feel good about yourself. Good Luck!! "

Someone is guilty of bringing that poor woman the food. They should be ashamed of themselves. "

Help is coming available, Dr. Bellenger/Hargroder are the doctors that preform these surgeries, they too also accept it, and so does our hospital where it's preformed. I wish you luck, being everyone in our facility has attended a specialty training on this issue, I can now understand the troubles one would have. Godspeed, and Prayers are with you "
