Young chess players to compete

Young chess players will have a chance to compete Jan. 31 when the New Iberia Optimist Club puts on its inaugural chess tournament.

Registration for the tournament will begin at 7:45 a.m. at New Iberia Senior High School. The first give rounds will begin at 9 a.m.

Players will be placed in four divisions: kindergarten through fourth grade; kindergarten through sixth grade; kindergarten through eighth grade and kindergarten through 12th grade.

Players will break for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. and will be treated to hamburgers and hot dogs, for a nominal charge, cooked by the Optimist Club chefs. Students can register for $7 through Jan. 21. After that, the registration fee will be $10. Prizes will be awarded for first through seventh place winners.
