A New Iberia Senior High School junior will be recognized Wednesday by the Iberia Parish School Board for her selection for the upcoming U.S. Senate Youth Program.

Laura Decuir, 17, will be honored at the IPSO’s regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the administrative offices at 1500 Jane St. She is the first NISH student to be selected as a delegate for the program, which takes place March 7-14 in Washington.

Decuir and her fellow delegates, two from each state, will spend the week listening to major policy addresses from senators, Cabinet members and other government officials. They also are scheduled to attend a lunch event with President-elect Barack Obama.

“We are extremely proud that Laura has been selected as a delegate to the U.S. Senate Youth Program,” said Superintendent Dale Henderson. “She has distinguished herself as one of only two students in Louisiana selected to participate in this prestigious program. New Iberia Senior High School and the Iberia Parish school system will be well-represented in Washington in March.”

Other topics scheduled for discussion at Wednesday’s meeting include a report on sales and use tax collections, payments on the 2004 bond construction projects and final payments on maintenance department projects.

The board is scheduled to discuss a staff recommendation for contracted lawn care for Caneview Elementary School and a renewal of the Wilson’s Janitorial Service Contract and take appropriate action.

The public is invited to attend.
