ST. MARTINVILLE — The St. Martin Parish Council will hear from representatives of the Buddies Program to talk about mentor programs within the 16th Judicial District at its meeting Tuesday.

The Buddies Program connects volunteer mentors with children at local schools to help students in instruction and guidance for at-risk children.

The Rev. Darren Sophus and Michael Rose with the Buddies Program will address the council.

Also at the meeting, the Parish Council will appoint two representatives to the 2009 Acadiana Resource and Conservation Development Council.

The ARCDC is a nonprofit organization that serves nine parishes in “environmental and rural economic development issues,” said coordinator Scott Edwards.

The nonprofit is a grassroots movement, but is teamed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Edwards said.

The meeting agenda calls for the council to select its chairman and vice chairman. Councilman Mike Huval is the current chairman and Councilman Lloyd Higginbotham is the current vice chairman.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Carroll J. Fuselier meeting room at the Annex Building.
