Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Iberia, for Woodrow Joseph “Woody” Fontenot, 77, who passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Iberia Medical Extended Care in New Iberia.

Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia.

Fr. Steven LeBlanc will officiate at the funeral Mass. Readers will be Celia Brisson and Allison Broussard. Jamie Fontenot and Lindsay Valls will serve as gift bearers.

“Woody” was a Master Gardener who loved to work in his garden and enjoyed traveling. Family and friends will long remember him for his sarcastic sense of humor. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 11792, Cajun Kiwanis and the Iberia Medical Auxiliary. “Woody” was retired from Cleco after 37 years of loyal and dedicated service. 

Survivors include his wife, Pruda Guillory Fontenot, of New Iberia; his son David A. Fontenot and his wife, Janet, of Richmond, Va.; his daughters Elizabeth Karen F. Fisher, Margaret Kim F. Broussard and her husband, Fred, and Melanie F. Brisson and her husband, Andrew, all of New Iberia; his brother Roderick Fontenot and his wife, Frances; and his sister Annetta Fontenot, all of Ville Platte. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jed and Celia Brisson, Lindsay Valls and her fiancé Cory Walker, Adam and Jamie Fontenot, Lucas and Allison Broussard; many nieces, nephews, and a host of good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Fontenot and Lelia Thompson Fontenot; infant daughter Karla; and his brother Rive Fontenot.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 3 until 10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, and continue at 8 until 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

Pallbearers will be Jed Brisson, Adam Fontenot, Lucas Broussard, Adrian Fontenot, Lloyd Armentor and Jimmy L. Romero.

 Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Boudelouche, Troy and Todd Fontenot, Pamela Fontenot, his Cleco family, and members of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 11792.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Abben, Dr. Ditch and their staff for the care that was provided to Woody. Also to the nurses and aides at Iberia Medical Extended Care, and a special thanks to Tricia Romero, his home health nurse, who provided him with the greatest care and compassion during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 409410, Atlanta, GA 30384-9410 or Catholic High School Development Department, 1301 DeLaSalle Drive, New Iberia, LA 70560.

Pellerin Funeral Home of New Iberia, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd., 365-3331, is in charge of arrangements.
