I hope you’re watching the Honor Roll in this paper listing the contributions received thus far for our Help the Helpers program. Check out the growing list of people who have generously donated to help us help 10 local organizations work with local people in need.

All contributions are important, and welcome, no matter the amount.

I do want to call special attention to two recently received, one especially generous, $500 from Blue Sky Oilfield Supply Inc., the other $207.50 from Avery Byron and Macy Romero, whom I am told sold cupcakes to raise money for Help the Helpers.

I’m told Macy’s grandpa helped too, but didn’t get his name.

What a great thing to see area youngsters getting in on the giving spirit.

I want to offer a special get-well message to longtime Daily Iberian Sunday columnist Morris Raphael, who took a tumble last week, breaking his arm near the shoulder.

Morris is a pretty tough guy, wincing a bit but not really complaining about the pain. And while he was waiting to see the doctor to find out his status, he did point out to me it was his left arm that was hurting so he still should be able to write.

What a champ.

Morris’ column has a huge following. I hear comments from people of all ages and backgrounds about things on which he writes.

Morris, hope you’re mended and back to full strength really soon.

Lots of people say Tabasco when they are actually referring to just any hot sauce. For years people would Xerox something when they meant they needed to make a copy.

Lots of people, especially in the South, say “Coke” when they mean soft drink.

So perhaps it’s a compliment that one of our subscribers recently just made his check payable to “Paper” and the bank accepted it.

Heck I’m complimented that if some refer to “the paper” people automatically assume it’s us.

But just to be safe, please make your checks out to The Daily Iberian, in case the bank has a new employee and they’re not quite sure.

While thinking of banks, I want to say thanks to the folks at Teche Federal Bank who opened their doors last Thursday night for a Business After Hours for members of the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce.

It was a really nice open house. The bank at Jefferson Terrace and Admiral Doyle was beautifully decorated for the holidays. There was a lot of good food and plenty of friends on hand for a most festive event.

Have you heard of the “sugar police?”

Heard some longtime locals laughing who said they always used real sugar in their coffee when dining out, for fear the “sugar police” would catch them using that stuff that comes in a pink, yellow or blue packets.

I’d never heard about the sugar police, but indeed remembering to try to support the sugar industry is a good idea, keeping in mind the important role it plays in our local economy.
