Lady Jackets win Lady Tiger Classic

New Iberia Senior High won the sixth annual Westgate Lady Tiger Classic basketball tournament with a pair of wins Saturday, beating McKinley 50-42 in the semifinals and defeating Comeaux 53-40 in the championship game.

Shalicia Rochon of NISH was named the tournament MVP after averaging 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks a game. Windy Charles, who also averaged a double-double, also was named to the All-Tournament team.

Joining them on the All-Tournament team were Abbeville’s Rechelle Bessard, Kaplan’s Tina Roy, Comeaux’s Jean-Marie Allen and McKinley’s Bianca Forbes.

The Lady Jackets (7-3) play St. Thomas More at 4 p.m. Monday in the Road to the Championship Basketball Series at the Cajundome. Comeaux plays Cecilia at 6 p.m. and St. Thomas More plays Northside at 7:30 p.m. in a pair of boys’ games following the NISH-STM girls’ game.

Tickets will be available at 3 p.m. Monday at the Cajundome box office.

In the semifinals, NISH outscored McKinley 27-20 in the first half to advance.

Sally Clavelle led the Lady Jackets with 16 points. Rochon added 14 points and Charles had 8.

Reina Kempt scored 13 points for McKinley.

New Iberia beat Comeaux 53-40 for the championship.

Point guard Shawanna Williams had a good all-around game, her coaches reported, scoring 21 points for the Lady Jackets. Crysean Clavelle played well defensively, the coaches added.

Rochon finished with 12 points and Charles with 9 for the Lady Jackets, who led 12-11 after one quarter but blew the game open by outscoring Comeaux 13-4 in the second period.

Leah Flugence scored 14 and Allen added 11 for the Lady Spartans.

In other games Saturday, it was:

West St. Mary 53, Beau Chene 49

Brittani Edwards scored 15 points for the Lady Wolfpack in Saturday’s first loser’s bracket game. J’Ashala Haynes added 14.

For Beau Chene, Candice Guilbeau scored 19 points and Kayla Demouchet added 8.

Abbeville 48, Ellender 37

Shamika Vallert scored 20 points and Bessard added 17 as Abbeville beat Ellender in Saturday’s second loser’s bracket game.

Ashante Thibodeaux added 9 for Abbeville, which trailed 26-17 at halftime but outscored Ellender 21-3 in the third quarter to take the lead.

Latika Smith led Ellender with 14 points. Kaylee LeBlanc added 9 and Brittany Price scored 8.

Comeaux 49, Kaplan 42

Comeaux led from early on and finally opened up the score in the fourth quarter, outscoring Kaplan 22-17 in the last period to advance to the finals.

Allen scored 15, Desiree Rogers had 12, Mercedes Boudreaux added 9 and Leah Flugence had 8 for the Lady Spartans.

Roy scored 17 and Taylor Choate added 10 for Kaplan.

Abbeville 47, West St. Mary 37

In the fifth-place game, AHS outscored West St. Mary 10-5 in the first period and led 20-13 at halftime on the way to its win.

Bessard scored 24 for Abbeville.

Haynes led West St. Mary with 16.

Franklin 61, McMain 36

In the consolation game, Franklin broke open a close game by outscoring McMain 35-15 in the second half, including 24-7 in the third quarter. The game was 9-8 after one quarter and 26-21 at halftime, with the Lady Hornets lead at both junctures.

Jamekia Colbert led Franklin with 15 points. Brandy Carroll added 12, Tanazia Washingon had 9 and Danae Daggs added 8.

McKinley 52, Kaplan 24

In the third-place game, McKinley blew open a close game in the second half by outscoring the Lady Pirates 19-2 in the third period and 12-4 in the fourth.

Forbes scored 16 and Aubrica Robins added 15 for McKinley.

Roy led Kaplan with 18 points.

Franklin 48, Westgate 36

In Friday’s consolation semifinals, Franklin pulled away in the second half after leading by 1 point, outscoring Westgate 15-8 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth.

Colbert scored 12 points and Kayla Jackson added 11 for the Lady Hornets.

Lavasha Allen led Westgate with 12 points. Shayne Charles added 9 and Lisa Keovongxay added 7.

McMain 46, Jeanerette 44

In the other consolation semifinal Friday, McMain held off a furious fourth-quarter Jeanerette rally to advance.

McMain rallied from a 16-12 first period deficit to lead 24-20 at halftime and 36-27 after three quarters before being outscored 17-10 in the fourth period.

Nicole Moore led JSH with 15 points and Clamesha Colar added 12.

McKinley 56, Beau Chene 30

In a second-round game Friday, McKinley outscored Beau Chene 13-0 in the second quarter to start pulling away.

Courtney Bradley scored 14, Forbes added 13, Robins had 10 and Kempt scored 8 for McKinley.

Demouchet led Beau Chene with 11 points.

Erath 59, Delcambre 52

DELCAMBRE -- In the Lynette Viator Memorial Tournament, Erath rallied in the third quarter by outscoring host Delcambre 21-8 to surge ahead after trailing 31-26 at halftime.

Kasey Landry led Erath with 19 points and Shay Thompson scored 18.

Jenny Bouillion led DHS with 22 points and Jaci Trahan added 16.

The Lady Panthers play Kaplan at 6:20 p.m. Monday in the Vermilion Parish Tournament at DHS. Erath plays Vermilion Catholic at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday in another parish tournament game.

North Vermilion beat Gueydan 53-30 in the DHS tournament finals. Macy Gautreaux scored 20 points for the Lady Patriots (9-1) and Shaley Woods led Gueydan with 10.
