An Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division officer implicated in a series of local burglaries has been arrested on new charges of possession of stolen property valued at more than $1 million, Sheriff’s Office authorities said Monday.

Jerrel A. Tauzin, 32, was arrested Nov. 15 after investigators found he was in possession of a laptop computer stolen in September from Breaux Brothers Enterprises, a shipbuilding company in Loreauville.

Breaux Brothers personnel said the computer, which has since been recovered, contains valuable vessel designs they estimated to be worth more than $1 million.

Tauzin was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center and is being held on $150,000 bond.

The arrest, Tauzin’s second in two months, comes amidst a criminal investigation that could lead to more charges against the former narcotics agent in the near future. Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal said Monday the Sheriff’s Office is preparing to charge Tauzin with at least 10 additional burglaries.

Ackal said Tauzin stole so many items he rented a storage facility to accommodate them. After obtaining search warrants, officials recovered stolen goods as evidence in the storage facility and in Tauzin’s home, Ackal said.

Tauzin was first arrested Oct. 30 after admitting to police he burglarized the home of a vacationing acquaintance.

In that burglary, Tauzin was charged with breaking into a residence on General Middleton Street and stealing a .40-caliber pistol along with three 9mm magazines, two Pelican flashlights worth about $50 each, a 4-wheel-drive radio controlled Revo 33 truck and an estimated $1,000 in accessories for the truck.

Tauzin was fired from the Sheriff’s Office after his October arrest. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and many details, such as the breadth of the burglaries, remain unclear.

As Tauzin worked undercover and was involved in a number of cases, the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has been reviewing its cases on an individual basis to determine the impact Tauzin’s investigation might have on pending litigation, 16th Judicial District Attorney Phil Haney said.

Tauzin worked as a narcotics agent for more than two years before his termination. Prior to his employment with the Sheriff’s Office, he worked in the corrections division of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office for nearly 11 years.

" More than half the time we got trouble in the neighborhood we do count on our neighbors because we have the sheriff's office and they did NOTHING!! So we take certain things into our own hands. Like I said, I do know some good cops, but because of the dummies like this one they don't get their credit. I have a few friends that are police officers and the main time I call is when I know they are working and I call their cells instead of dispatch. Alot more gets done that way. As for as dispatch goes, that's-a-whole-nother-story. "

" Why was he still a Deputy after being arrested the first time? See what I mean people, the law is a crock. A citizen does it look then=m up and throw away the key, but a badge wearing, untrue to his job, no good Deputy does it and he has a chance to do it again. It's sooooo sad what this world has come to. 90% of police these days are useless and only want to have a gun, a badge, and drive really fast cause they know they won't get caught. Thanks for prtoecting and serving us guys! "

" The sick criminals in IPSO uniform can get themselves well behind bars where they belong. They believe they are above the law because that's their everyday work experience from day 1 out of police academy watching their experienced peers do it and get away with it. District attorneys and sheriffs tolerate these everyday misdoings, then are fake and so surprised in public when the behavior they tolerate finally escalates to the point the media wakes up. "

    " Family member:
You are talking about a grown man who has chosen to protect and serve the public by upholding the law. This same man has chosen to abuse his power by violating the very law he has sworn to uphold. The crime is bad enough, but this violation further erodes the public trust, thus contributing to a breakdown in both moral values and public safety. You reduce these multiple offenses to a mistake??? Would you feel differently if a cop you didn't know robbed you? Also, what is he getting better from? Criminal behavior? "

" I agree, “It isn’t always what it seems.” It seems that Tauzin had one or more accomplices in his criminal activity. Were these accomplices deputies as well? Tauzin is refusing to cooperate with investigators to make that determination.

As well, his arrest will allow drug dealers and drug users, the ones he arrested anyhow, to walk the streets of our community. Upon his conviction, I can only hope that Sheriff Ackal and District Attorney Haney will not ask the Judge for leniency in the sentencing of Mr. Tauzin. "

" It isn't always what it seems. The papers will only report what it wants. Yes, he did wrong and will pay for his mistakes in more ways then anyone knows. Not all of the information will be told so the full story will never be heard. Being an undercover narc agent is extremely dangerous and I think that it was in poor judgement to give his identity to the public. He has done a lot of good during his nearly 15yrs. as a cop. Now he will focus on getting himself better. "

Ackal hired who he wanted after interviewing each employee that applied for a job with the Ackal administration! People continue to blamd Sid Hebert for the problem employees when in fact , Sid has nothing to do with their being hired by the Ackal adminstration! "

PS Mr Sais will get his chance in court, this DOES NOT make him not guilty. "

    " To ALL,
Tauzin is actually one "sick" individual. Yes, he stole, and burgled, and maybe other things! BUT he did not try to fence anything, it may appear! What with things in his house AND a rented storage shed. This, to me, signals he did NOT do it for the money. Maybe for a thrill?
YES, absolutely he should be punished! He should also be remanded to a psych evaluation. After a thorough eval, he should be compelled to follow the treatment specified! This does include jail time, if convicted!
To IPSO, I'm sorry that he "tarnished" your good reputation! "

Ackals failures being blamed on Sid Hebert are ridiculous but the same type of excuse that will come out when Obama fails to deliver, it will then be a lag effect from Bush of course. Face it Ackal rehired many that were FIRED by Sid Hebert because he runs with these type of people. "

What do you want?? Would it have made you happy if Sheriff Ackal had fired the entire Dept and just started over??

It's folks like YOU that would be doing all the crying while you had NO police protection as the NEW GUYS were trained!

As I said a couple of posts back, WHAT have YOU, and the complainers done for Iberia lately? Other than complain? "
