Jackets open tourney with win

JENNINGS -- Harold Roberts scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as New Iberia Senior High beat Jennings 55-42 in the first round of the Jennings Tournament Tuesday

Jelani Benoit added 12 points for the Jackets (1-1), who pulled away from the Bulldogs with an 18-point fourth quarter. Kendele Thomas and Jabian Robertson each scored 7 points for NISH.

Brandon Smith and Devondrick Phillips led Jennings with 8 points each.

New Iberia plays Thursday at 8 p.m. against the Lake Arthur-Acadiana winner.

Westgate 80, Abbeville 73

Jacolby Colbert and Deon Anthony each scored 19 points as Westgate High rallied from a 10-point deficit Tuesday to beat Abbeville .

Josh Boutte added 12 for the Tigers (1-0), who trailed 24-14 at the end of the first quarter but slowly cut into the deficit and took the lead for good in the final period.

Damion Levine had 18 for Abbeville and Macumbia Ardoin added 15 in the loss.

Westgate plays Alexandria Senior High Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Opelousas Tournament.

Franklin 62, Terrebonne 60

FRANKLIN -- Chase Boykins scored 21 points as Franklin opened the regular season with a win over Terrebonne Tuesday.

Titus Guilbeau added 13 and Alan Harding chipped in 11 for the Hornets, who trailed 34-30 at halftime but rallied in the second half for the win.

Individual scorers for Terrebonne were not available.

Franklin returns to action Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Centerville Tournament.

St. Martinville 58, Rayne 35

RAYNE -- Shanle Batiste had 11 points and Derrick Gardner and Terrence Linden each scored 10 points as St. Martinville opened the regular season Tuesday with a win over Rayne.

The Tigers (1-0) jumped out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead.

Paul Charles led Rayne with a game-high 16 points.

SMSH plays Pineville Friday at 5 p.m. in the Peabody Tournament.

New Iberia 67, Lake Arthur 38

JENNINGS -- Wendy Charles scored 23 points as New Iberia Senior High Lady Jackets blew past Lake Arthur Tuesday in the Jennings Tournament.

Shalicia Rochon added 12 points, Jasmin Fusilier had 10 and Kaysean Clavelle chipped in 9 points for the Lady Jackets, who rolled to a 27-7 first quarter lead and were ahead 44-11 at halftime.

Carly Hay scored 22 for Lake Arthur.

NISH (2-0) plays Sulphur today at 6:30 p.m. in the tournament.
