Jackets fall just short

BREAUX BRIDGE -- After scoring a grand total of 9 points in the jamboree Saturday against West St. Mary, New Iberia Senior High found its scoring touch Monday with 43 points but fell 3 points short in a 46-43 loss to Breaux Bridge to open the regular season.

Steven Cormier and Jared Monette each scored 18 points for the Tigers (1-0) who bolted out to a 14-7 first quarter lead and held on despite a second half rally from the Jackets (0-1).

Kendele Thomas led NISH with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Ronald Gillis had 6 points and 14 rebounds and Trent Gaddison added 7 points and seven rebounds.

NISH will play Jennings in the Jennings Tournament today at 8 p.m.

North Vermilion 74, ESA 63

CADE -- Ben James scored a game-high 23 points as North Vermilion successfully opened the basketball season with a win over ESA Monday.

David Lute added 18 and Kelvin Matthews had 14 for the Patriots (1-0), who led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and 35-24 at halftime.

Max Kallenberger had 17 for the Falcons (2-4), who play in the Erath Tournament starting Thursday.

Erath 52, Vermilion Catholic 40

ABBEVILLE -- Keenan Guidry scored 20 points as Erath beat Vermilion Catholic in the season opener for both teams Monday.

Joshua Pillette added 10 for the Bobcats, who rallied from a 12-7 first quarter deficit and outscored VC 45-28 the rest of the way for the win.

Erath will host its own tournament starting Thursday.

West St. Mary 58, Jeanerette 46

BALDWIN -- Jaquincy Colbert scored 22 points and Jonah Jack added 11 as West St. Mary opened the regular season with a win over Jeanerette Monday.

The Wolfpack (1-0) trailed 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime but outscored JSH 38-25 in the second half for the win.

Gerrell Jean Louis led Jeanerette (0-1) with 19 points.

WSM plays Grand Isle Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Centerville Tournament.

New Iberia 49, Breaux Bridge 24

BREAUX BRIDGE -- Kaysean Clavelle scored 15 and Shalana Key had 14 as New Iberia Senior High doubled up Breaux Bridge Monday.

Shalicia Rochon finished with 8 points and Crysean Clavelle added 7 for the Lady Jackets (1-0), who took control of the game with a 21 point second quarter.

NISH plays Lake Arthur today at 6:30 p.m. in the Jennings Tournament.

St. Thomas More 62, Franklin 30

FRANKLIN -- Brandi Schambough scored 21 points Brooklyn Arceneaux added 10 as St. Thomas More blew past Franklin Monday in the season opener for both teams.

STM, which led 19-10 after the first quarter, outscored Franklin 20-7 in the second period to take control of the game.

Individual scorers for Franklin were not available.
