This weekend marks the sixth annual Lydia Cajun Food Fest and Fais-do-do presented by the Lydia Cancer Association at Weeks Park in Lydia.

An event with fun for every member of the family, the Cajun Food Fest features 26 food booths, 24 craft booths, military equipment displays by the National Guard, a rock wall, slides, face painting and a train ride.

Festivities kick off Friday with live music starting at 5 p.m. by The Bad Boys and No Left Turn and resuming at 8 a.m. Saturday. A Poker Run starting from Weeks Park begins early Saturday morning, followed by an opening ceremony and survivor’s walk at 9:30 a.m.

Live music begins again at 10 a.m. Saturday with Hwy. 329, and performances from Geno Delafonse, French Rockin’ Boogie and Broken Mojeaux continuing throughout the afternoon.

Cookoff awards and a raffle drawing are at 2:30 p.m.

Event organizer Debra Savoie said this year’s Cajun Food Fest has grown from last year’s, which was the club’s largest.

“We made close to $100,000 last year and had more than 3,000 attendees,” she said. “We hope to do even better than that this year.”

Event organizer Ronald Landry said this year’s food lineup is “fantastic.”

“We really try hard to cater this event to families,” he said. “We are hoping for good weather, which makes it even more enjoyable.”

In addition to fun festivities, proceeds from the cookoff help the association help cancer patients by providing medical suppllies, emotional and educational support and in some cases financial assistance.

“Cancer touches all of us,” said Ronnie Thibodeaux, the group’s current president. “Everybody that comes out can support a good cause because we can’t do what we do without the support of the people.”

Landry also mentioned a hot air balloon might fly over the event Friday night.

Savoie said Cajun Karl, star of a Cajun cooking television show, also is scheduled to visit the event and will be shooting footage for one of his upcoming shows.

Attendees are asked to make a $5 donation at the gate for entrance. The Lydia Cancer Association does not allow pets, ice chests, bikes, skateboards or four-wheelers into the park for the event.
