Gerald Faulk, Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce board chairman, said last year when volunteers were setting up for Saturday’s events, there were a large number of people downtown asking if they had food or drinks Friday night.
“When that happened, we said ‘Well next year we’ll have to do that.’” Gerald Faulk said.

There is a record number of booths cooking up their specialties for Saturday, anything other than gumbo, said Janet Faulk, Chamber president and CEO.
“Various shops will also be open downtown Saturday with some offering special discounts for the day,” she said. “We hope that this is a most prosperous weekend for the entire community.”
The cookoff begins early Sunday morning for competing teams with gumbo sales starting at 11 a.m.
There also will be live entertainment from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Faulk said she has been involved in fundraisers for many years and the volunteer power for the Gumbo Cookoff has impressed her.
“The people in Iberia Parish and the surrounding communities really support the Gumbo Cookoff well,” Gerald Faulk said. “People don’t realize how integral to the success of the event the mayor and sheriff’s cooperation is. They have been fantastic to us. We are looking forward to a good family-oriented weekend and saying our prayers for good weather.”
Advance tickets for food and drinks are available through the Chamber office on Main Street in New Iberia.
Janet Faulk also said there will be road closings associated with this weekend’s cookoff.
“For those businesses that may have special customer appointments on Friday, please note that the cookoff set up in Bouligny Plaza will begin Friday morning,” she said. “Please make parking arrangements other than Bouligny Plaza.”
The following street closures are anticipated for the event:
Iberia Street, St. Peter to Fulton, closed Friday at 6 p.m. until Sunday at 6 p.m.
Main Street, Bridge Street to French, closed Friday from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Fulton Street, from Burke to Fisher, closed Friday at 6 p.m. until Sunday at 6 p.m.

Can't they get a little bit of free salt to put in their gumbo? "
