Scary storytelling

Skeletons, transformers, fairies and Hannah Montana wound their way down a path lined with paper lanterns and jack-o-lanterns, past the Weeks family cemetery and volunteers with the 4-H Junior Leader Club to gather beneath The Shadows on the Teche’s moss-draped trees and share in a long-time Halloween tradition: scary stories.

Harrison Beach, 7, came dressed as a skeleton — “But not just any skeleton — Skelebones, the leader of all the skeletons.”

His friend Isaac Timkin, 6, is planning to be a mummy for Halloween, and came for the first time, too.

Seven-year-old Robert Pinckney Jr. came dressed as a clone trooper with his dad, Robert Sr., and his mother, Lenoria.

Some even rolled up in strollers. Saturday was Jackson Hulin’s first birthday — so they’d been having a Halloween birthday, capped by the event,  said his mother, Christina Hulin.

Nine-year-old Elizabeth Deslatte came dressed as Hannah Montana.

Cylas Vidrine, 7, came as a transformer, accompanied by his grandmother, Elizabeth Boutte, and his cousin, Meryl Boutte.

“I came one time when I was little,” Meryl said.

“I always wanted to come again. It was so much fun — and it sets the mood with the trees.”

Before the event, Cylas said if it were up to him, he’d be playing video games.

Maybe by the time storyteller Sylvia Davis, spotlighted in flowing clothes of orange and black, finished her verbal magic, working her voice up into crying and screaming and down into different characters, he changed his mind.

Shadows-on-the-Teche education curator Catherine Schramm said the turnout seemed to be about 200 people, which is what they usually expect.

At the end of one of her first stories, in which Davis, as a nine-year-old, had tried to get the attention of adults that wouldn’t listen to her because she’d tricked them, she said, “I never told another lie and that’s the truth.

“What. Why are you laughing?”

" I enjoyed this event. I wish there were more activities around Halloween to take my child to. "

" The night could not have been any better. My husband, daughter and I went to listen to these stories for the 5th or 6th year. Sylvia Davis was very intertaining and the other children seemed to enjoy it. My family talked about the stories all weekend. It was wonderful. "
