Work Release Program

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 5:48 AM CDT
What a shame that someone or group of people would house criminals next to an elementary school!! Once again the safety of our youth is at stake. Does anyone know who we as parents can speak to about preventing this from happening??? Or is it too late???? Where is the school board member of Dist. 10? Seems as though nothing is being done to address this serious concern for the students, faculty and staff of the new Caneview Elementary School. (Grand Marias and Peebles Elem.) Can someone please help with this??

Mr. Ackal & officials did a superb job at making everyone feel really relieved for the situation at hand.
I know every prisoner needs a chance to get back out to have a productive life but I don't want it near my children or my home.
Unless you have children at this school you don't know how it feels!
God Bless All! "

egardless, Sheriff Ackal did (as usual) the right thing by blocking the move. At least he listened to the concerns as unfounded as they might have been. "

The parking talked about is behind Cajun Archery. That piece of land is only 60' wide and extends halfway to Neco Town Road. There has to be a place to park all the people that will be working, transporting, etc. That puts the parking directly behind Caneview. If you were familiar & have the surveys, aerials, documents,it would be crystal clear. They haven't started anything yet because they just closed on the property. Anymore questions? "
To Who Owns it wrote on Oct 24, 2008 4:36 PM:
The parking lot is on the west side of the school nearest the Styles hair cutting place. There is no construction nearest the land bordering Darnal road --where the two buildings are.
IF you owned the land they bought which I doubt it doesn't make you privy to the architect plans and you obiviously know nothing about the school design or layout as it exsists now.
Oh and work with several parents whose children will go there. They live in the area and don't see the problem. "

Thank goodness a meeting has been organized!
Why not call in to Teche Matters on KANE ? The more publicity the better. As Deputy says,Write DOC. Write Blaine Meche,District 10 School Board member as well as all of the School Board and the Supt. I already have.
You will find there is more support out there than you think if you let the citizens know the facts. "

You cant put it by my house because I or my family own all of the land by my house....you can put it across the bayou from me though... but they have houses there too... so not really realistic. but if you would it is different anyway. The Inmates would be there when I am at home. They (for the most part) will not be there when your kids are at school. They will be working.... possibly next to where you work. So maybe you should find a new job. "

Keep in mind -- officials have rules regulations and laws concerning this type of matter. Lawsuits occur from things like this. Do you think if there was a possiblity that heaven forbid one of the horrible criminals -would storm the school hold the children hostage and rape and murder the teachers - the STATE GOVERNMENT would have allowed this to happen? Think people. "

As to the person who sold the land -- Who is putting a parking lot where??
There is nothing but tall grass and cane on that corner. The school is closer to the old flea market. I have no bone in this dog fight -- Just wanted to clear the matter on what was near the school. "

Here is what I saw.
The building which was in the news paper is one of two buildings there. It is NOT the building closest to the back of the school.
You have the school, an empty field, a canefield, a pipe fence, one building and then the Cajun Archery/Printing building.
On the side of the school, a canefield, then a hair cutting place that use to be a flea market. On the OTHER side of the flea market a house and trailers. "

There are two buildings there - one was the old Cajun Archery that is the one that was sold. The woodworking is in the other building nearest the school. It is still open -- my brother just bought a CYRESS swing from those people.
Problem is?? Oh and it's is still a good distance from the school. "

The Louisiana Work Release Bought the old Cajun Archery building on Darnell Rd.,and plan to move from its current location on Broken Arrow Rd.,and open a new work release program there in January 2009. This property is just a few hunderd feet, if that from the back of what will be the play ground of the new Caneview Elementary School. This Must NOT Be Aloud To Happen. "

is the Wood Working Shop of which you speak. It has been sold specifically for this purpose. This was verified in an article in the Iberian on October 8th with a picture. There is no argument that the facility is there and that it is 160 feet from the school.Listen to what"Deputy" says and write the DOC and your school board. The Work Release building is the WOODWORKING SHOP!!It has been sold to a company that does this for a living. This was in the paper on Oct.8th with the address and a picture. There is no argument of where the facility will be.The back door of the facility is 160ft. from the school playground!! "

The issue is about a house in the area that may possibly be a half way house already Not Opening.
The school in question has no houses near enough to it to be an issue. The back side of the school is a field and a woodwork business. The side of the school is a field and a barber shop In front of the school is Hwy 90 service road ,the other side is Daranall road. "

Move the school?? This school that the children have waited for three years to be able to attend. Not having a playground or regular class rooms.
It's not like these criminals are working at the school or even hanging around the school.
The places nearest the school grounds don't even share a fence line.
With all the is wrong with our school system do you think this is the most important?? "
Where wrote on Oct 15, 2008 4:52 PM:
It's not like the kids will be sharing a fence with these people.
It would be no different than taking your child to Wal Mart where the criminals would be alot closer and have better access to your children. "
