Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church for Ina Elliott Davis, 96, who passed away on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.

Reverend Ann Sutton, Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, will conduct the funeral services.

Interment will take place in Beau Pre Cemetery in New Iberia.

Ina Elliott Davis was born in Preston, Ontario, Canada on July 28, 1912, to William Harrison and Hattie Mae Elliott.  She began her formal schooling in a one room school house.  She graduated in 1931 from Prescott Rural High School in Prescott, Kan.  She earned an Associates Degree in Education from Fort Scott Junior League College in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1933.  In her first job, Mrs. Davis taught upper Elementary grades in addition to being the principal in Devon, Kan. 

Ina married Alvin R. Davis in 1937.  Soon after, during World War II, the couple moved to Santa Ana, Calif.  After Captain Alvin Davis was discharged, they moved to Winfield, Kan.  In the 1950s, the young couple moved to Lafayette, where they both went into the field of Education.  Mrs. Davis complete a total of 34 years of teaching.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Southwest Louisiana Institute (SLI) in 1953.  She taught for four years at Judice Elementary School in Judice, followed by 19 years at Lafayette Elementary School.  Mrs. Davis continued her formal education while teaching in Lafayette.  In 1960, she earned her Masters Degree in Education from University of Southwest Louisiana (USL).  She then accepted the title of Elementary Supervisor in the Louisiana State Department of Education.  In 1960, she earned the Masters Degree Plus 30 Graduate Hours certificate.  She taught at Sts. Leo-Steon Elementary School from 1978 until 1985.

Mrs. Davis was honored by the Lafayette Parish School Board for making a lasting contribution to teaching at Lafayette Elementary School.  She chaired, wrote and put out bids for group health insurance and hospitalization coverage for all Lafayette Parish School Board personnel.  The insurance coverage plan currently in place is the same format as the one initiated so many years ago.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Davis Newsome, Ph.D.; one son, Mike Davis; four grandchildren, Laura Figueroa, Heather Davis, Russell Davis, D.D.S. and Jessica Rasile; seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Carl Cline Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Alvin R. Davis.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Russell Davis, Rowland Newsome, Mike Davis, John Bourque and Edward Fichter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the 5th floor staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
