Elizabeth was born in Paris, Tenn., on Sept. 22, 1914, and died on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.

Elizabeth and her husband, Sam, moved to New Iberia in January of 1946 and immediately became active in their church and community.  Above all, Elizabeth was a loving wife and homemaker. Her life was filled with service to others, which was evident in her participation in church and community service organizations. Elizabeth was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served it in many capacities throughout the years. She served as local president of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service (now the United Methodist Women). Her leadership extended to her serving as an officer on the District and State levels of the organization. She also designed and made banners for the church representing the various events held during the church calendar year.  For a number of years, she did extensive visiting to the shut-ins of the Methodist Church, sharing her time with members who no longer could attend church.

Elizabeth was a member of the GFWC Woman’s Club of New Iberia for many years, serving as President from 1955-1957. She held offices on the District and State levels in Federation as well. As a volunteer in the Woman’s Club, she worked at the Mental Health Outreach Clinic assisting in counseling and occupational therapy sessions.

Elizabeth shared her art work talent with many people, designing Christmas stockings for many children.  She also shared her water colors and decoupage prints.  She did beautiful needlework; many times designing her own patterns. Her hands were never idle. Elizabeth sewed her own clothes for many years; made drapes and curtains for her home; and did interior decorating for her home with the aid of Earnest Nereaux Jr.

One of her greatest joys was the surrogate relationships she and Sam developed over the years with so many young people. They provided love, encouragement, guidance and support throughout the years, enriching the lives of their surrogate children.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles M. Hurt; her mother, Elizabeth Vandyke Hurt; brothers Charles Marvin Hurt, William Douglas Hurt and Terry Kent Hurt.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Marion Sam White; sister Henrietta H. Collins of Louisville, Kentucky; nephew Terry Collins; niece Martha C. Farris; great nephews Greg Farris and Victor Farris; great niece Deidre F. Brutscher;  nephews Charles John Hurt and Raymond Leroy Hurt; and nieces Janet Irene Jones and Judy Marie Hardy.

Pallbearers will be Guyton Watkins, Don Rutherford, Jerry Wallace, Marcell “Snub” DeRouen Jr., Dr. Don Henegan and Peter Landry.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Gray, Ray Derouen, Barry Poole, Michael Cockrell, George Trappey, Lynn Derouen, Jerry Huck, Jack Broussard, and Bud Lee.

The family would like to thank her faithful and compassionate sitters, Tammy Guilbeaux, Kayla Broussard and especially Jenny Perero, for their constant loving care, and also to Hospice of Acadiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, may be made to the First United Methodist Church in New Iberia or to the charity of your choice.
