Fernest “Pac Man” Martin narrowly edged out incumbent Stephen Falterman for the city marshal’s seat in Saturday’s election.

Martin, a drill instructor at the Lee Street Alternative School, was elected to the post with 1,178 votes or 51.42 percent to Falterman’s 1,036 votes or 45.22 percent. Ronald Bourque followed with 77 votes or 3.36 percent of the vote.

Falterman has held the  position of city marshal for the last 12 years.

Martin said he is excited and eager to take on his new duties as city marshal.

“The people spoke. They were ready for a change and it was obvious they felt that way,” said Martin.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity and I am thankful to Stephen Falterman for all he did for this office, as well as Ronald Bourque.”

Martin, a former police officer and lieutenant with 16 years of law enforcement experience,  said his number one priority will be to work together with the Jeanerette Police Department to better serve the community.

Martin said he plans to work toward making changes to help address issues with juveniles, domestic violence and crime.

“I am thankful to the citizens of Jeanerette for their support, thankful to God and to my wife and kids and the  sacrifices they made so I could be a part of this. It is truly a blessing.”

Falterman said he knew the race would be a close one.

“I’m thankful to the people who allowed me into their homes and lives over the last 12 years. The marshal’s office and court system has worked very hard to serve everyone in Ward 3,” said Falterman.

Falterman’s term as marshal will conclude on Dec. 31.

Of the 4,805 registered voters eligible to vote, 47.7 percent of them cast ballots. The Ward 3 marshal’s seat encompasses all of the city limits of Jeanerette and some of the immediate rural areas of  the city.

" I know you guys aren't talkig? I found a card with Stephen falterman inside my mailbox and several others.Let's talk about stephen's deputies wearing re-elect stephen T-shirts inside the station and also given citizens who come to pay citations a t-shirt. I have a picture. Be serious whether you like him or not he is a great looking guy. To call someone ugly is childish and hateful. Stephen paid people to vote, paid for liquor and food for votes. Mr. Martin,he simply walked and knocked on doors. remember his comment "I'm trusting God". Mr. Martin stay strong. God bless you! "

" Do you think it would make a difference if we did complain? The paper is once week. So now its been up there 2 weeks. Yea I am tired of looking at his ugly self. Falterman is much prettier to look at. "
