For most of the football teams in the Teche Area, week five is the last week before the start of district play.

It is the last chance for teams to work out problems and fix lineups before district play begins and with it, the chance to improve the power rankings for playoff positioning.

St. Louis at Catholic High

Catholic High receiver Thomas Theriot (4) tries to escape Franklin defenders Ryan Sorrell (25) and Chris Marshall (54) in a game played last Thursday. It’s homecoming week at Catholic High and the Panthers play host to St. Louis High from Lake Charles before getting into District 6-3A play next week.

The Panthers (1-3) dropped a 28-26 overtime decision last week to Franklin but head coach Craig Brodie thinks his team is actually looking forward to homecoming week as a chance to put the Franklin loss behind them.

“I think that homecoming is a good distraction for us from the loss last week,” said Brodie. “It’s probably a good thing for the kids. They’re excited about the game and everything with the week.”

St. Louis (2-1) is expected to bring a solid team into the contest.

“They are a good team,” said Brodie. “Well coached. What they do on offense and defense is not complicated. I think we match up well with them.”

Comeaux at New Iberia

Fresh off its first win of the season, 44-0 over West St. Mary, the Jackets (1-2) play host to Comeaux (3-0) before opening district play against cross-town rival Westgate next week.

“They beat Northside and South Terrebonne in the first two weeks then last week played a team that didn’t challenge them,” said NISH coach Rick Hutson.

Comeaux beat Lee High 68-0 last week.

“They have a pretty good team this year and very good on the offensive lines,” said Hutson. “We’re going to have to play our best game of the year to beat them.”

Westgate at Sulphur

Two teams that played two tough games last year meet up for their third contest in two years.

In the regular season Sulphur beat Westgate 28-14 only to see the Tigers reverse the table and win 14-9 in the first round of the playoffs.

Westgate (2-1) lost a 24-21 heartbreaker to St. Thomas More last week after leading 21-0 at halftime. Sulphur (21-15) beat Carencro 21-15

Breaux Bridge at SMSH

The battle of St. Martin Parish continues this week at longtime rivals Breaux Bridge (2-1) and St. Martinville (1-2) renew acquaintances.

SMSH enters the game off a 41-7 loss to Northside while Breaux Bridge beat Beau Chene 34-7 in the District 5-4A openers for both teams last week.

Vermilion Catholic at Loreauville

The Tigers (2-1) beat Delcambre 28-20 last week while VC (0-4) lost 25-22 to Ascension Catholic.

Both teams start district play next week as LHS plays Livonia and VC plays Central Catholic.

Berwick at Hanson

The Hanson Tigers (0-3), still looking for their first win of the year, plays host to Class 3A Berwick Friday night. The Panthers (2-1) beat White Castle 13-8 last week.

Hanson rallied from a 22-0 deficit last week but fell 29-22 to De La Salle.

Erath at Church Point

Last week Erath quarterback Chris Tyson was responsible for six touchdowns, four rushing and two passing, as the Bobcats (3-0) stayed unbeaten on the year with a 49-21 win over Rayne.

This week, EHS hits the road to play Church Point (2-1) who lost 26-12 to Class 4A No. 2 ranked Eunice last week.

West St. Mary at Donaldsonville

The Wolfpack (0-3) travel to Donaldsonville (2-0) Friday night. Last year, the Tigers rolled to a 64-14 win. This year, WSM enters the game off of a 44-0 loss to NISH while DHS beat Fisher 43-12.

Delcambre at North Central

The Panthers (1-2) look to end a two game losing streak Friday when the team travels to North Central High (0-3).

Delcambre rushed for 272 yards against Loreauville last week. For the year, Lane Reaux has rushed for 418 yards for the Panthers.

North Central enters the game off of a 64-0 loss to Livonia last week.
