The New Iberia City Council will choose whether or not to authorize payment to former New Iberia police officers who have sued for back pay at a meeting Tuesday.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Daniel M. Landry, has estimated the average payment proposal at around $3,900. City attorney Ted Haik has said this number is more a maximum than an average, and the amount paid would vary between $800 or $900 to $3,900.

Haik said there are 31 plaintiffs remaining in the suit.

There also will be several public hearings at the meeting, one of which concerns the old Timeless Treasures building across from Mount Carmel on Duperier Avenue.

The city is re-applying for the Brownsfields grant necessary to clean the property. Elmire Elledge, city clerk, said the city wants more input from city and neighborhood residents than it received before the last time the city applied.

“It looks like a really good grant,” said Elledge.

She said it’s a national grant and the federal government wants to see what the outcome will be on the property.

There will be another public hearing at the next meeting. Some ideas are to use it as a green space or a veterans’ memorial.

The council also will hear two presentations, one from George Glaubrecht of Domingue Szabo and Associates on its recently completed study on the Armenco Canal, and one from Richard Daigle of the Small Business Administration on low-interest disaster relief grant opportunities available to businesses, homeowners and renters.

The Council will discuss future plans for the Steamboat Warehouse.

One wall in the historic building collapsed during Hurricane Gustav and became the subject of an emergency meeting the week before the Sugar Cane Festival.
