The fans have spoken.

Westgate quarterback Deon Anthony and Catholic High defensive back Nick Domingue were chosen in The Daily Iberian’s first weekly Internet fan poll asking them to select high school Players of the Week.

Anthony and Erath defensive back Mikey Seymour earned Daily Iberian/RC Cola Player of the Week honors as selected by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian.

Anthony, a senior, received 50 percent of the vote in the Fan Vote poll for Offensive Player of the Week, conducted on The Daily Iberian’s website, www.iberianet.com. That was enough to top Loreauville running back Dillon Anthony (29 percent of the vote), Jeanerette quarterback Kurt Bouie (14 percent) and St. Martinville running back Brandon Jacob (7 percent) in the poll.

Deon Anthony was a very efficient 9-for-12 passing for 161 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers’ 26-19 win over St. Martinville.

Dillon Anthony ran for 177 yards on 20 carries in Loreauville’s 12-7 loss to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte, prompting one fan to nominate him for the honor.

Fans are asked each week to nominate players online, listing reasons for their nominations. Nominations are accepted beginning with the first game of the week and continuing into the following Monday, when the top nominees are selected for inclusion in a poll at www.iberianet. com/sports. Fan votes are taken through that Thursday, when the poll closes and the votes are tallied for use in an article in The Daily Iberian and on its Web site.

Bouie passed for 129 yards and rushed for 58 yards and a TD in the Tigers’ 27-20 loss to Rayne. Jacob ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on eight carries for St. Martinville.

Deon Anthony also earned Player of the Week honors as selected by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian.

On defense, Domingue received 52 percent of the vote to earn Fan Vote Player of the Week honors, edging Westgate’s David Youman with 45 percent of the vote. Mikey Seymour of Erath received 3 percent of the fan vote.

Domingue had two interceptions to stop Eunice drives in the Panthers’ 42-0 loss to the Bobcats.

“I think Nick Domingue did a great job last Friday night and he deserves to get Player of the Week,” one fan wrote regarding the CHS senior defensive back. “Great job intercepting the ball.”

Youman, who had two sacks to stop St. Martinville’s last drive in Westgate’s season-opening win, had plenty of fan support as well.

“I think Westgate High School's David Youman (#25) should be the defensive Player of the Week,” wrote one fan in nominating Youman. “Your article in Sunday’s paper says it all. He made some huge plays on 3rd and 4th down to allow Westgate to come out on top. I was at the game Friday and saw him come off the field numerous times, absolutely exhausted, but would return to the field each time with determination.”

“My vote goes to David Youman #25,” another fan wrote. “He played a good game. GO TIGERS, GO DAVID.”

Seymour earned Daily Iberian/RC Cola Player of the Week honors as selected by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian.

The sophomore defensive back had two interceptions, including one for a touchdown that was called back because of a penalty, along with four assisted tackles. He also had one punt for 41 yards that was downed at the E.D. White 4-yard line in a 7-6 Erath win.

“He really stood out on defense for us,” said Erath coach Jacob Byler. “I certainly consider a punt a defensive play that helped us win the game.”

Player of the Week honors are sponsored by Streva Distributing.
