Fan input sought for Players of the Week

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 11:15 AM CDT

The Daily Iberian is asking fans of local high school football to take part in its weekly Player of the Week program by nominating players they feel deserve recognition for their efforts in the previous week's games, then voting in a weekly Internet poll on The Daily Iberian’s Web site, www.iberianet.com.

Because of the disruption to the prep season caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, the program will begin with games of Friday night, Sept. 19.

Fans will be asked to nominate players by posting their nomination, and the reasons (and/or statistics) why the player was nominated, as a comment at the end of the weekly Web story asking for nominees.

The Daily Iberian sports staff will then select offensive players and defensive players from those nominees to be listed in the poll, which will be posted on the sports page of the Iberian Web site, www.iberianet.com/sports. Fans may vote for their choices until Thursday at 2 p.m., when that week’s polls close and are tallied.

The offensive player and the defensive player who receive the most votes in the poll will be chosen as Fan Vote Players of the Week.

The Daily Iberian also awards separate Player of the Week honors for an offensive and defensive player as chosen by the newspaper’s sports staff. Player of the Week award winners receive a T-shirt sponsored by The Daily Iberian and Streva Distributing.

" How do we have players from St. Mary and Vermilion parishes nominated for the "Iberian" player of the week. Maybe St. Mary and Vermilion parish should start their own nominations and voting process. "

" This is a great idea nominating the offensive/defensive players of the week, but lets not forget about the offensive "big boys" who hold the line and protect the quarterback week after week to make the plays happen!!!!!! We dont recognize them nearly enough and with quarterbacks, RB's, and WR's included in the 'offensive' mix, we should also pay attention to the offensive line-who we so easily forget. "

David Came Up Big In Tha Fourth Quarter Against St.Martinville To Seal The Deal For The Tigers He Showed Blitz On Third, and Fourth Down and Got To The Quarterback Causing Him To Get Pounded Into The Turf On Third Down And Just Throw It Away On Fourth Down.David Is A Great All Around Football Player,He Shows Dedication Every Time He Steps On The Field. " I Think Deon Anthony Should Be Offensive Player Of The Week Because Inspite Of Not Playing In Four Weeks He Came Out With Fire. He Shows A Lot Of Determination, and Perserverence No Matter What The Outcome Is He Will Go Out There And Give Westgate Football Team & Fans His All. He's So Dedicated To This Program,That It's Not Even About Winning Or Losing,He's Just Doing Something That He Really Enjoys. So For His Hard Work and A Job Well-Done He Should Be Named Offensive Player Of The Week.

    Go Tigers "

" I think Westgate High School's David Youman [#25] should be the defensive Player of the Week. Your article in Sunday's paper says it all. He made some huge plays on 3rd and 4th down to allow Westgate to come out on top. I was at the game Friday and saw him come off the field numerous times, absolutely exhuasted, but would return to the field each time with determination. "
