Local Sports Coverage

I want to know why the UL football game was not covered equally to the LSU football game in Sundays paper.  UL played a much better game than did LSU and they have a leading rushing running back that is making history. (139 yrds 3TDS) They also have a starting QB that is from New Iberia.  So what's the deal Daily Iberian news paper?  LSU had half of the front sports page and UL had 3 paragraphs on the back of the front page.  I don't live in Louisiana anymore, but the Texas town that I do live in certainly supports their local team better than you do.  (No I do not think that Baton Rouge is more local that Lafayette and no amount of "LSU flag ship" riff raff is going to change the fact that UL is closer to New Iberia.   Geaux Cajuns!

P.S.  The LSU score was announced during the UL Game.  "Auburn 17 and LSU 3"  The crowed Cheered.

" LSU='58, '03,'07 national champions, flagship/largest university in the state, perennial SEC powerhouse

ULL= consistently mediocre member of a mid-level major conference

    Questions?

As far as academics are concerned, every major university in this state is at least competitive and in some instances better than LSU: e.g. ULL nursing, engineering programs, Tulane/Xavier/Dillard medical programs.

They will never compete on the same level as far as football is concerned. Each year, however, a Louisiana university receives approximately 500-600k for its game against LSU. Like LSU, that money supports academic as well as sports programs. "

I cover high school football and recruiting currently for louisianaprepinsider on the scout.com network. I also served as senior writer for the rivals.com site(pelicanpreps.com). Rivals is the leading competitor of Scout, for those who aren't into recruiting. "

I would bet there are more families interested in the kids sports than there are BASS fisherman who get a full page almost every weekend. Oooppsss I forgot he is interested in the bass fishing scene. So I think that is your answer, if it interests him then its in if not oh well. I bet this gets EDITED "

These high "school players" you think so little of, do a very good job at their universities. Not everyone can meet your "high standards" thank God. Considering your statement, they are more educated also. "

" I am a USL (ULL) graduate. Some of my children are LSU grads and one is a UL grad. When I go to UL games, LSU is booed when a score is posted and the Tigers are winning. UL athletic supporters generally hate LSU's success. UL should strive to be competitive with LSU in others sports. They NEVER will in football. The hate expressed only makes ULL fans look like stupid bush league fans. Each school has academic strengths and weaknesses. "

I think it is great two local boys are playing football in Lafayette, too bad they couldn't get a scholarship to a real football team like the Tigers. I don't waste my time reading high school sports or irrelevant teams like the Cajuns. "

" This article is not about UL vs LSU. It is about the quantity and quality of sports coverage the Daily Iberian publishes. Chuck B is right. The Iberian only covers stories that they can get off the wire. They do not even cover all of the sports from the local high schools. They don't even update their web sports page daily. You can get better sports coverage from KANE than you can get from the Iberian. The local newspaper should cover all of the local schools equally - Universities and High Schools. But they don't. "

Hey I graduated from UL and work for LSU, sorry but when I attended UL (1997-2002)if they even broke an attendance of 5000 people at a home football game they were lucky. You want politics there is nothing like it better than in UL football. So get over the jealousy of LSU being the flagship school, UL will NEVER be it. By the way I am a true LSU fan but do contribute to UL financially. So all the LSU haters out there...get over it and GO TIGERS! "

" The Answer is a whole lot Simpler than all this is being made out to be. Plain and simple. It's the Newspaper. The Daily Iberian Does not have reporters and photographers to cover much outside of New Iberia. Just look at the newspaper. About 90% of the articles are Purchased from AP or UP. Plain and ssimple, the Daily Iberian is mostly just purchased stories off the WIRE. Logically, there are more Sports stories on LSU than there are on UL for sale on the WIRE. Thats the Simple Facts. Its Not about support, its pre-written stories. "

The reason there is no news coverage is not more than 7000 people go to their games and 2 time BCS national champ LSU consistantly has over 90000.

The Cajuns get their coverage, but you have to admit, they are a junior league when compared to LSU. I cheer for both, but I am not so diffusional to think that they are equal to each other. I say go Cajuns and go Tigers, I cheer and am proud of both! "

I simply don't understand how one university can't support another? When UL wins, Tiger fans cheer - sounds like someone's got the case of the green eyed monster...

PS - Defending National Champs, LSU, played Auburn, advanced to #5 in the nation, and broke an on-the-road losing streak....Get over your "press coverage" - Tigers deserved it more! "

Support ULL- It's "were" not "where". (must be an LSU grad)

LSU fan- You must mean "If you barely passed High School play for LSU. Don't worry about education we'll pass you if your good. If you want a collage education play for UL." "

" LSU flagship "rif raf" as you state is a ridiculous comment. LSU is trying to improve the quality of education and improve upon the image of the state of Louisiana. LSU has made great strides in implementing the flagship agenda and in turn improving the quality of graduates. Your negative comments just prove a lack of support for your state. Please understand that just because LSU is improving it does not mean ULL is suffering (the 2 are not mutually exclusive). Lastly, I am a New Iberian who graduated from LSU and supports both LSU and the Cajuns. "

I don't get why ULL fans hate LSU. You need to support ALL Louisiana teams. And the reason for more sports coverage of LSU is because LSU is a national football powerhouse. Also, there are LSU graduates that live in New Iberia so get off your high-horse. "
