Delcambre High, Elementary closed Monday and Tuesday

Delcambre High School and Delcambre Elementary School will be closed Monday and Tuesday in the wake of Hurricane Ike and the widespread flooding it brought to the area over the weekend.

All St. Mary Parish Schools will reopen Monday, according to the school district’s Web site.

In St. Martin Parish, all schools are scheduled to reopen Monday with the possible exception of Stephensville Elementary School. St. Martin Parish Schools Superintendent Richard Lavergne said at 5:30 p.m. Sunday that buses would probably not be able to reach about 15 children without pushing floodwater farther into yards but that those students would be excused if they could not make it to school.

He added that it had begun to rain in Morgan City Sunday evening and that there was still a small chance school could be canceled Monday.

In Iberia Parish, Henderson said Delcambre High had water in the industrial arts building, old gymnasium and junior high area. Delcambre Elementary, he said, has about one half an inch of water in its library. “We’ll be reassessing things on Tuesday to make a determination about reopening,” he said Sunday. “It’s not just a school issue, it’s a community issue. Several families in the area evacuated and we need to be sensitive to them needing to tend to personal needs.”

Henderson added that neither school appears to have lost power over the weekend and that much of the water from the surge had receded. “It’s just a matter of clean up now,” he said.
