Teachers and Students Getting Short Changed

By IPSB Employee

I am not sure if the public is aware of the procedures for teachers and students receiving supplies for each school year.  You, as good citizens of New Iberia, contribute to a fund (1/2 cent sales tax) when you make purchases as a consumer.  This money is distributed to schools on a "per student" basis.  Schools then divide the money so that paper, dry erase markers, staples, printer ink, etc can be purchased as needed.  Teachers are also able to order things for their specific classes in order to set up centers and perform other things like painting, science experiments, etc.  Teachers are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to order their items from a company called School Specialty because they will get a small discount on merchandise purchased through them.  As stated previously, these orders were placed in the spring and MOST teachers have still not received their supplies.  Now it is September and we've just learned that anything not delivered within 60 days will be cancelled and not be shipped at all.  One thing worth mentioning is that someone at the school board (we don't know who) has told School Specialty NOT to send our items as they usually do, but to trickle them in because the school board has NO SPACE or PERSONNEL to check it in.  I'm pretty sure that IPSB has a warehouse somewhere or a few empty classrooms that could hold our supplies.  I'd even give up my Saturday or Sunday to go sort through some items for them.  I'm sure other teachers would do the same.  One of the reasons we are so upset is because this year we have a new reading series that requires us to ability group students for instruction.  We ordered tons of things for creating centers that we are required to have.  I hope you, as a community, support us and your children and cry out loud over this situation.  You don't realize just how much money is being wasted.  Just as an example, my allottment was about $400.  Multiply that by all the teachers in this system and it's a lot of your money being wasted.
