At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he’s got the size to play college football.
As a quarterback, he can run (240 yards, three touchdowns last year) and he can throw (1,100 yards, 12 TDs).

“I plan on having a good year this year,” said Boykins, whose given name is Gregory. “It’s my senior year.”
Success this season for Boykins can be defined in simple terms.
“I just want to win district and go deep in the playoffs,” he said. “To do that, we need to work harder, practice smarter and give it all. If we do that, then we’ll be all right.”
Last year as a junior, Boykins shared time at quarterback with Jamond Johnson and that experience proved invaluable.
“It definitely got me prepared for this year,” said Boykins, who threw for 1,100 yards but only completed about 40 percent of his passes.
“Part of our problem last year was that we had receivers drop a number of passes,” said Franklin coach Zeb Simon.
“It was something that we had to work on in the spring.”
Boykins also thinks that some of that fell to him for a lack of preparation, something that he hopes won’t happen this year.
“We had summer workouts every day where the receivers and I came out and threw the ball around,” said Boykins.
Simon feels that his starters is everything you could want in a quarterback.
“He’s 6-3, 6-31⁄2 with a big arm and very accurate,” said Simon. “We feel that Chase will have a big year at quarterback. What our passing game does makes our running game that more effective.
“In our spread offense where we run the zone read, he does a great job of running option football in the zone read.
“He makes the correct read, knows when to give, knows when to keep the ball, knows when to pitch.
“It makes it tough on a defense when you have a quarterback who could do both, throw the ball exceptionally well and also run the zone read offense to the perfection that he does.
“Everything starts with him and we have the receivers to complement him.”
That showed in the summer as Franklin attended several passing camps.
“We went to UL (Louisiana-Lafayette), Sugarland Optimist and we hosted one here in Franklin,” said Simon.
“We were very effective and executed very well and I think that Chase had a lot to do with all facets of our offense.”
Boykins wants one other thing this year.
“The 2004 class had an 8-2 record and went to the playoffs. I want to beat that record,” said Boykins. “The passing yards and touchdowns don’t matter to me. I just want to win.”
