After four days, more than 1,000 Iberia Parish residents who evacuated before Hurricane Gustav’s landfall Monday are home. And, they’re happy to be back.

Lawrence Babineaux of New Iberia said he would not want to repeat his four-day experience in a shelter in Monroe — an experience he said was “rough.”

“We felt like we were in prison,” Babineaux said at 11:55 p.m. Thursday as the coach bus that carried him back to New Iberia arrived at the SugArena on Louisiana 3212.

Parish resident Darnell Bryant stayed in the Old State Farm Building in Monroe, which was used as a shelter.

He described his stay as “horrible.”

“We were there for three days with no showers or baths,” Bryant said. “They had over 1,500 people there and only 25 or 30 portable toilets at first.”

Derrick Keal of New Iberia stayed in the same shelter as Babineaux.

“It was four days of hell,” Keal said.

Mildred Wagner and Homer Sims, a couple also from New Iberia, were glad to be home, too.

“I’m so tired,” Wagner said. “We got a lot of rain.”

Her husband also took issue with the conditions of the shelter.

“There were too many people there,” Sims said.

Iberia Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Jim Anderson said the first bus of evacuees, including many elderly and/or disabled parish residents, arrived at the SugArena at approximately 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Buses were expected to continue bringing the evacuees there through the night, and volunteers were on hand to serve dinner and assist the returning residents.

From there, residents were brought by Iberia Parish school buses to drop off points in New Iberia, Jeanerette, Loreauville, Rynella, Coteau, Lydia and Olivier.

While 35 buses of various sizes and types were used to evacuate the residents Sunday, primarily to shelters in North Louisiana, although some to shelters in Missouri and Texas, Anderson was unsure how many would be used to bring them home.

“We thought we might have 500 people but ended up with over 1,100,” Anderson said. “The state is responsible for getting them back to New Iberia, and we get them home from there.”

Anderson said initially a decision to bring the evacuees back would not be made until electric power had been restored to the parish, yet on Thursday he said this had to be changed as the shelters needed to be emptied.

“They asked us to expedite getting them back, although there is a possibility some will still be without power,” Anderson said. “It was a call we had to make.”

Iberia Parish President Ernest Freyou gave the all-clear Wednesday for parish residents who had evacuated under their own power to return home, provided they had their own transportation and were “self-sufficient,” meaning they had a livable structure to stay in.

" Shame on us for allowing "equal rights". I am sure any color elderly or disabled person without the means necessary to evacuate would appreciate it too if all of you "young" people looking for a free-ride would have stayed home also. Then they would have had a clean safe facility. I would open up my house to anyone who is grateful and respectful; the rest aren't even welcome in my dog's kennel. Remember a few rotten apples do spoil the whole thing for the rest of us. Signed, Fed-Up. "

" I see why they hesitate to go to N.I. to HELP, greedy ppl looking for a handout for ****.Instead of you bickering&complaining, think about the troops instead of sit at home,or better yet in the shelters and plot on how to lie to FEMA,RED CROSS,FOOD STAMP OFFICE to get assistance that you do not need b/c more than half who is complaining live in an apartment which most of them already are destroyed and do not belong to you,do not work, walk around town like you are more than one another and not one of you wrote to say "THANK YOU" "

" Thank you for being there to take care of what I see as the most ungrateful people on Earth. As I posted before, the men and women armed forces, police department, paramedics, utility workers, nurses, doctors, etc. that stayed and continued to look after use are most appreciated by a majority of the people. Even the people up north that donated their time were frustrated with the lack of self respect these evacuees had. What ashame! "

" Most people who evacuated, work& pay taxes. Many of us live from paycheck to paycheck ¬ because we choose to. I'm sorry if some of us don't have "surplus" money to evacuate with. My entire biweekly paycheck was spent on gas, food, & rooming. So for the self-righteous, evacuees have a right to expect decent conditions when they are ordered to evacuate. Many of you who are posting mean words, are going to be the first ones in the food stamp, fema,& red cross lines, if & when that aid becomes available. People still deserve to be treated like people. "

" These people have relevant complaints. Many people, like myself wanted to stay in their own home but were told not to. We had the option to either leave or go to jail. Such good options. With this MANDATORY evacuation order ,people were not given many choices. People were not seeking luxury, just decency. Privileged people, think about your kids or your elderly parents having to deal with filth, as well as , unsafe conditions after being ORDERED to evacuate. Relevant complaints!!!! "

" I guess these people were expecting a week at the Embassy Suites. The problem in Iberia Parish is not exclusive to the hurricane, but much of life in general. Too many people want a handout, a free ride or something for nothing, and will use ANY opportunity they can to exploit their own problems in an effort to get something for nothing. Those picketing the food stamp office are a good example of this...I wanted food too, so I went to the store and bought some. "

" Thanks to Mr. E. Freyou and the quick responds team in Iberia Parish for letting us know to move out and get ready for the hurricane. We are bless to have a team that did so well to the people of Iberia Parish it could have been worst, but thanks to them we are safe and with our families. "

" Why can't people be thankful for what they got - free evacuation. When I left NO before Katrina, noone paid for my gas or my food. Those of you sent to shelters paid for nothing. I understand how elderly and disabled need help. Perhaps they wouldn't have had the undesired conditions of the shelter had so many low life not taken advantage of the opportunity for yet another FREE RIDE!!!

How about trying to do something with your life. Then you will have a way to get out in case of a hurricane!!! "

" I'm a soldier. I listen to these ungrateful people moan and groan about the condition they had to endure. Well, let me tell you about us soldiers out their handing out supplies and protecting your property. I've been sleeping on a hard cot in a armory since Thursday August 28. Been eating MRE's. Working 15 plus hours a day. And I haven't even been able to check on my place. So you whining ungrateful people. STOP COMPLAINING OR MOVE NORTH OR BETTER YET MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY! "

" How about being grateful you had a way to get out, a safe place for you and yours to get out of the storm, and a way back. You ate and slept. Instead, you jumped up and down, in front of the cameras demanding money, showers, etc. Maybe next time you oughta stay put and see how well you fare. "

Why is it that these are the only people complaining...Katrina victims in Mississippi NEVER COMPLAINED OR YELLED FOR FREE STUFF...All have jobs and know how to fend for themselves and gather to help the ones who are truly in need..This is ridiculous, never appreciate anything... "

I rented my own room for my family in Mississippi and purchased my own food. Money is tight and I used what little extra I had to evecuate. My only complaint is. Im tired of hearing all of the low life people who suck off of my tax's and make a living at it complain about how they are not treated like royalty. WHO DO YOU WELFAIR PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE? "

    1. Stay home and fend for yourself; FREE doesn't mean the Hilton and Towers!
    2. GET A JOB so you can leave and rent that Hilton room you are looking for.

I was sent a few comments from the Channel 3 news from irrate people in the Shreveport area. One stated,"they brought their drugs, booze and cigarettes with them but no diapers for their kids."

YOU WANT ME TO DONATE FOR THIS???? "
