Iberia schools superintendent: 20 schools have power

Dale Henderson said it is still to early to determine if Iberia Parish schools will have school Monday, one week after Hurricane Gustav hit the Teche Area.

The Iberia Parish schools superintendent said Thursday 20 of the school system’s 31 schools have power and school would only reconvene Monday if most of the 31 schools had power restored before Monday.

Henderson said it has to be almost all schools with electricity or there will not be school on Monday. He hoped to have a decision by the end of the day Friday or Sarturday.

The information will be updated on this Web site quickly.

The superintendent said most of the 31 schools had minimal damage from Hurricane Gustav. Grand Marais Elementary School did have its meter service pulled from the building and that will require more time to fix.

He said he is asking for all principals, custodial and janitoriall staffers to report to work Friday. The three central offices — the Education Center on Lemaire Street, the Administrative Offices on Jane Street and the Special Education and Janitorial Office at the base will all be open Friday.
