Andy Smith, a New Iberia resident and internationally known musician, began sponsoring a fundraising effort along with the other members of his band.
This is one of the best ever, said Dayna Perry, executive director of the Iberia Humane Society. The event began Friday night with a big “PAW-T” in the Pavilion at Cypress Bayou Casino with music provided by none other than the Andy Smith Band.

Varnado said the people attending the party and auctions had fun.
“We had some really good items and the bidding kept going up,” she said. “Andy was astonished at how much the bids were for those items.”
Both a silent auction and a live auction featuring 15 “large ticket items.” Karen Lott, a volunteer treasurer on the board of directors, said the live auction netted $12,850 while the silent auction brought in $3,020 on Friday night at the casino.
“The LSU football helmet was purchased for $4,300; it brought in the most money,” Lott said.
Thirty four-man teams played in the golf tournament held at Squirrel Run on Saturday. Smith made his rounds and talked to and thanked each of the players for their support in his cause.
Before the start of the golf tournament, dozens of door prizes were also given out.
Mike Braud, a golfer from Gonzales and longtime friend of Andy Smith, teed off with a group of golfers under the team name, Better Than Andy.
“We put that name on our carts to give Andy a hard time,” Braud said.
