A suspect is in custody this morning after jumping into Bayou Teche following a foot pursuit in New Iberia.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies chased a 37-year-old man on foot in the general area of Lewis and Main streets, near the Lewis Street Bridge, on the city’s east side, according to the sheriff’s office.

IPSO Public Information Officer Wendall Raborn said a deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle parked near a business on Darcy Street. Deputies approached the vehicle and after the driver got out he fled on foot to evade capture, Raborn said.

The suspect entered the Bayou Teche and continued to elude deputies, he said. Deputies searched along the water’s edge for nearly an hour. At 5:50 a.m. a deputy chased the suspect towards the west bank and the suspect eventually was captured at 6:08 a.m. Ammunition was found in the suspect’s vehicle although no weapons were recovered at that time.

Raborn said the suspect hit his head and was injured when he jumped into Bayou Teche and was then taken to a local hospital.

Charges are pending against him and an investigation is continuing.

" Wow...I can't believe some of the comments that I'm reading here. Maybe if they did something about the drug EPIDEMIC in New Iberia things like this wouldn't be happening. I doubt that there is one person in New Iberia who doesn't know someone, or is related to someone who has a problem with drugs. Shame on you, this could be one of your family members and then you'd be crying foul! Can't anyone see the drug problem in New Iberia? "

" Been there, done that. Spike is the man in the DA's office. He knows how to light that flame. I have complete confidence in him. What I am doing is making Ackal aware that there are other issues such as this that need attention. If I could bring it to the state's attention I would. But it is completeley impossible when your case worker won't even respond. I will keep on hoping and praying that this issue is looked over. God Bless you too! "

" I don't know what you would like Sheriff Ackal to do about non-support. This has to start within the Non Support Office first. The sheriff can't do anything unless this first comes from the Non support Office, the DA Office or the court system. Mr. Ackal cannot just act alone with this type of issue. I suggest you go to the Office of Non Support and turn this scum that does not pay to help support his children. Sometimes it is a long process. Good luck and I pray things work out for you. "

" Gee, one guy, on foot and they finally caught him and he was @ the hospital for 6am. Hmmmm...injuries from the Bayou? I doubt that seriously. I personally know this guy ~ he's got a good heart. Maybe we need to start paying attention to other things such as unpaid child support. What can you do about that Mr. Ackal? There's alot of people out there that owe arrears and are still walking free. When is this gonna change? "

I grew up with this guy and yes he has issues but he is still human. What happened to treating others the way that you want to be treated? Why should he have drowned for what he did? Nonsense!!!! "

I know you needed to apprehend him, but if he needed help while in Bayou Teche, maybe some one could have thrown him a brick, next time {Ha,Ha}!
Good job on your follow-up. Maybe next time, you can call in the dogs to get him. But still, a job well done!
Thanks for keeping our streets safer!
Godspeed To Sheriff Ackal, and ALL of IPSO! "
