Burglary victims Linda and Louis Boutte of New Iberia are “angry and frustrated.”

Some time between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Friday, burglars broke into the Bouttes’ Caroline Street home on the city’s east side. After breaking into the house through a glass window and stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, the burglars attempted to steal other items as well, including a television.

“I understand that we are the 17th house in this area that’s been broken into,” Linda Boutte said.

Alton Darby Jr., owner of Darby Architects at 1010 S. Evangeline St., said his business was broken into Saturday, although nothing was stolen.

“The deputy who arrived didn’t take any fingerprints or anything,” Darby said. “He asked me my name and information, but that was about the extent of the investigation. Basically he said that this sort of thing has been happening all over this area.”

Darby added that this was the third time his business had been broken into over the past few years, and that he is afraid.

“I’m thinking about buying a gun,” he said.

New Iberia City Councilman Rocky Romero, whose district includes Caroline Street, said several residents have spoken with him about recent burglaries in the area.

“It seems like a trend,” Romero said. “It looked like they were targeting that area specifically.”

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office would not confirm if there is a burglary problem in the Caroline Street/District 4 area. When asked about residents’ reports of more than a dozen burglaries, the IPSO referred The Daily Iberian to its patrol division, which has not answered questions for The Daily Iberian.

City Councilman David Broussard said although he had not received any specific reports of break-ins from his constituents, he is looking forward to the new Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol cars, which will be used exclusively towards patrolling New Iberia.

“Sheriff Ackal will help us tremendously when he patrols all the streets,” Broussard said.

Public Information Officer Wendall Raborn said when reported, burglary cases are forwarded to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and cases are assigned by the supervisor. Raborn expects more officers to be added upon the completion of the newest class of deputy recruits.

“We’ll be able to add more officers to investigations,” Raborn said.

Between Jan. 1 and  Aug. 10, a total of 263 vehicle burglaries, 115 business burglaries and 295 residential burglaries have been reported to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. For 2007, those numbers were, 494, 240 and 512, respectively.

" I feel certain this information is getting to the liaison officer---the difference is there is not an election pending so he doesn't feel the need to report that crime still occurs under Sheriff Ackal's watch! This would cause concern from the citizens just as it did in the previous administration and he/the council doesn't want to do that! They are all in cahoots together! Good luck learning the truth! I bet there's more going on than meets the press these days! Where are you Jeff Moore & the CID "RAT"? "

" Why is it that the crimes in the different areas are NOT reported to the Liasion Officer that gives a report to the City Council every meeting. My area is the one that is in the so called "trend" of robberies and break-ins. I will be anxiously awaiting the next council meeting to see if the recent criminal activities in my area are reported. "

" Then the "poor" will NOT have to go out and rob/steal anymore! They will have enough to live on, and maybe a little extra! The extra, I'm sure, will be put right into a Roth IRA or a 401 retirement plan!
SEE? This way, Sheriff Ackal and his deputies will have a work slow-down! NO more robbing and stealing! They will then have "more time" for the REALLY important crimes like barking dogs, loud music and loitering!
I do hope you know I'm "funnin" with you! Everyone MUST watch out for each other's safety!
Best Wishes Sheriff and Deputies! "

" I know the IPSO is going to do a GREAT job! The problem, of course will continue at least until 20JAN09! Then, if the DEMS are elected to the Presidential Office, THE NEW taxes will come rolling out. You see, it is a problem of {lack of}wealth that is creating ALL of these thefts! So when the tax becomes affective for people making over $45K a year, the thefts will STOP! It is then, the DEMS will "redistribute" the "extra wealth" from us "rich folk" and give it to the poor... "

Robbed in this area..... wrote on Aug 15, 2008 3:50 PM:

" We were robbed in this area also. Sad thing is the criminals are getting away with this. No one is being charged with these crimes and it will probably continue. I voted for Louis Ackal and am behind him 100%. My only hope is that these criminals are eventually brought to justice or we are in for more of the same. It is up to the citizens of this area to band together and work to take our neighborhood back. I pray every night that no one is killed when all is said and done. "

" This sheriff ran his whole political campaign on a new beginning. This is politics. What goes around comes around. Unless the judicial system as a whole does a 180-degree turn, you'll be out as fast as the other guy. The difference is that you won't have a chance to not run for re-election. "

" Why is it that when Sheriff Hebert was in office the people stomped their feet every day in the media complaining about the departmentand their so called inability to solve crime! Today Sheriff Ackal is in office and crime in a neighborhood is a "Trend". I noticed stats were printed but I ask why is it that the stats aren't just from July to now! Might make for interesting reading don't you think? What are you hiding Ackal??????? "
