The attempted second-degree murder trial of Bacardny George, 22, began Tuesday at the 16th Judicial District Courthouse. The victim in the case, Nicole Watkins, 23 at the time of the assault, was found at approximately 7:20 a.m. April 12, 2007, with head injuries believed to be caused by blows with a cinder block.
Ralph “Bud” Lee, who was with the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for more than 30 years, said he lives near City Park. Lee testified that at the time of the assault he heard “you’re killing me” coming from the park.

Lee noted the vehicle’s license plate number, which led to the arrest of George. Lee testified that he then tried to help the victim and called 911.
“Her head was a mess,” Lee said.
Jury selection in the trial began at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and opening remarks in the case began shortly after 2 p.m. Assistant District Attorney Robert Odinet represented the prosecution.
“The evidence will establish beyond a reasonable doubt that he was trying to smash someone’s head in,” Odinet said during his opening statement.
George’s lawyer Kay Clark, with the Indigent Defenders Office, told jurors they must determine the credibility of each witness, and reiterated her client’s plea of not guilty.
George was convicted in 2002 for illegal carrying of a weapon. He was convicted again in 2004 for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and resisting an officer.
Watkins was convicted of battery of a police officer in 2001 and simple battery in 2002, and was later convicted of disturbing the peace by fighting, possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine in 2005 and resisting arrest in 2006.
In April 2007, the sheriff’s office said the attempted murder charge was filed against George based on evidence left at the scene and the level of Watkins’ injuries.
On Tuesday, Judge Edward Leonard said he expected the trial to be concluded today.
