NILL Junior Boys second at state

JONESBORO -- The New Iberia Little League All-Stars were the runners-up at the State Junior Boys Little League Tournament last week, going 2-2 overall.

New Iberia’s 13- and 14-year-old team opened the tournament with an 11-10 win over Avoyelles Parish on Aug. 18 and followed that with a 9-6 win over Bossier Parish on Aug. 20. Avoyelles came out of the loser’s bracket to beat NILL, representing Iberia Parish, 10-2 on Aug. 22. That forced another game on Aug. 23, with Avoyelles winning the state title with a 14-10 win.

NILL team members were Devin Boutte, Kyle Broussard, Colby Cook, Evan Hebert, Trey Hebert, Velot Khammany, Corey Rogers, Blake Romero, Jacob Romero, Alex Suire and Kyle Suire.

NILL 11, Avoyelles 10

New Iberia scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and escaped with the win on opening day at the state tournament after Avoyelles got three baserunners on in the seventh inning, two of them reaching third base.

NILL trailed 5-1 after one inning and 8-1 after three but scored four runs in the fourth to pull to within 8-5. Avoyelles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth but did not score again, and New Iberia scored three times in the fifth and three times in the sixth for the win.

Leading hitters for NILL were Boutte with two hits, a walk and three runs scored; Rogers with a hit and two runs; Khammany with two hits and two runs; Evan Hebert with two walks and three runs; Alex Suire with a hit and a run; and Trey Hebert with a run.

Cook started on the mound for New Iberia, going six-plus innings and striking out eight while allowing nine hits and one walk. Rogers came in for the save.

NILL 9, Bossier 6

New Iberia scored three runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to pull ahead of Bossier in the Iberia Parish team’s second game.

Rogers pitched six innings for the win, with Jacob Romero finishing up. Rogers allowed five hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Romero allowed had a strikeout in one inning pitched.

Bossier scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-5, taking advantage of a walk and two errors. NILL scored another run in the sixth and Bossier scored one in the seventh.

Leading hitters for New Iberia were Cook with two hits, a walk and two runs; Jacob Romero with a double, two singles and two runs; Evan Hebert and Alex Suire, each with a hit and a run; and Rogers, Kyle Suire and Khammany with runs scored. Trey Hebert also had a hit and Blake Romero drew two walks.

Avoyelles 10, NILL 2

Avoyelles forced a final game after scoring six runs in the third inning of their game against New Iberia.

The game was tied at 1-1 after one inning but Avoyelles scored three runs in the second and took a commanding 10-2 lead after three. New Iberia scored one run in the seventh.

Rogers took the loss, allowing six hits and walking three while striking out four. Evan Hebert finished the game, allowing three hits and striking out three.

Khammany singled, was hit by a pitch and scored a run for NILL. Kyle Suire had a hit and scored a run, Jacob Romero had two hits, Broussard and Trey Hebert each singled and Cook was hit by a pitch.

Avoyelles 14, NILL 10

New Iberia led 5-3 after one inning but Avoyelles rallied to tie the score in the second and went ahead after outscoring NILL 5-2 in the third. Each team scored two runs in the fourth, with Avoyelles scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. NILL scored one time in the sixth.

Khammany had two hits, was hit by a pitch and scored twice for NILL. Boutte had two hits and scored a run; Rogers had a hit, a walk and scored a run; Jacob Romero had a hit, two walks and scored twice; Cook had four hits, including a homer, and scored three runs; Broussard, Evan Hebert and Kyle Suire each had a hit; and Blake Romero scored a run.

Rogers took the loss, giving up 10 hits and two walks while striking out one in two-plus innings.

Khammany finished out the game, allowing three hits and six walks with eight strikeouts.
