School supplies given away BY MARY CATHARINE MARTIN THE DAILY IBERIANLocal nonprofit Creole Creation is giving away school supplies Saturday. Creole Creations program director Kina Sweet said there will be “a little bit of everything for the kids” at the event, which lasts from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Bingo Palace USA, 1752 Center St. Some of those things are the opportunity to sign up for free art lessons at the Acadiana Creative Arts Center, a chance to apply for and get answers about the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program, facepainting, fingerprinting and free food. The Boys and Girls Club and the Mayor’s After School program will be on hand, along with an Iberia Parish School Board representative promoting drug free schools. “Of course, we’ll give away basic school supplies,” she said. She said the supplies are given away on a first come first serve basis. The organization has about 510 packs that include tablets, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, pencil sharpeners and highlighters. All children must come with a parent or guardian to receive supplies. It’s open to those entering grades kindergarten through 12. |
