A near four-hour manhunt ended last night when Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a man they believe shot and killed his ex-girlfriend.

IPSO Public Information Officer Capt. Wendell Raborn said the manhunt began at 6:11 p.m. Thursday when authorities responded to the Iberia Village Apartment complex at 502 Admiral Doyle Drive, where a shooting was reported.

“When deputies arrived, they found a 31-year-old black female in the apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” Raborn said.

Iberia Parish Coroner Dr. James Falterman Sr. said 32-year-old Cherlyn Peters was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m. Thursday in the emergency room of Iberia Medical Center.

“She had a gun shot wound to the right shoulder and chest,” Falterman said this morning. “That was the cause of death. The manner of death I have ruled as homicide.”

An IPSO release said witnesses told deputies the victim and Victor Hill, 27, were involved in an argument that turned physical. Deputies were told Hill was arguing with the victim about a cell phone and began hitting her with his fist.

During the fight, Hill pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.

The Sheriff's Office said Hill fled the area in a Toyota Avalon with his current girlfriend, and his girlfriend contacted the Sheriff’s Office a short time later, saying Hill had taken her vehicle at gunpoint and left her on the side of Admiral Doyle.

Investigators located the girlfriend and brought her to the Criminal Investigation Division for questioning, Raborn said. Deputies and investigators found the Avalon at a Washington Street residence around 9 pm. Occupants told investigators Hill left the area in a Honda Accord driven by a female.

“An intensive search was conducted and the vehicle was located on LaSalle Street in New Iberia shortly after 10 p.m.,” Raborn said.

“Deputies were able to stop the vehicle on Field Street near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and take Hill into custody without incident. The female in the vehicle was brought to the CID (Criminal Investigation Division) where she was interviewed and released.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim and Hill were previously involved in a relationship and 11 juveniles and the victim’s brother were present in the apartment during the shooting.

Hill, also known as Clarence Wilson, was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center on a second degree murder charge, as well as armed robbery and felon in possession of a weapon charges.

“The elements of the crime did not constitute first degree murder,” Raborn said.

“The district attorney’s office was at the scene and assisted on advising on the appropriate charge.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Hill has an extensive criminal record consisting of narcotics charges, charges for violent crimes and probation violations.

No bond has been set at this time.

    Scientific Classification:
    Domain:Eukaryota
    Kingdom:Animalia(Animals)
    Phylum:Chordata
    Class:Mammalia

Therefore Homo Sapiens (Humans) are animals.
Well kids Science class is over for the day, let’s go to recess.
P.S. This is like 7th or 8th grade stuff, maybe younger so hopefully everyone does know this and you were just making the statement out of respect for Animals? I Don’t know but whatever. "

    " To "Look at Both Sides";
Due to your "opinion", I believe help may be in order. There is nothing wrong with a woman "playing games" with a guy. Guys do it also! But to think she may have deserved this, is really troublesome to right thinking people!
I do hope you are not in a committed relationship. If so, your partner may be looking for a way out. This is one type of thought that goes through abusers minds, to "rationalize" their abuse. "

" I don't know anyone involved but you dont know if she "played games" with him and if she did that is no excuse to take her life and that is wrong for you to think that. Do you really think that is equal punishment? She didn't kill him. Is this a sexest comment? Would it be ok if he "played games" with her and she killed him? Then would they be both equally at fault? God Bless their children that now have to grow up with out a mom and a horrible dad that might kill them too... "

" Keep this in perspective. An animal does not use a gun to kill. However, a human monster does. Please don't use an animal to describe what this horrible human did. "

" My deepest sympathies to the children and other family members on this senseless murder!
The saddest part of this shooting, aside from the woman killed, is the fact he WON'T get the death penalty!
You see, his attorney will try to suppress his previous arrest record, thereby not allowing the jury to know his entire criminal background.
The attorney will claim it has-nothing-to-do-with what happened on that day!
I believe the laws should be changed, to-show-his-and-other's-criminal-activities to the juries!
ONLY then, can we be "saved" from the criminal element! Keep-them-in-jail! "

" "A Dear Friend of Victim": sad thing is, for 2nd degree murder, I doubt he'll be getting the death penalty though I agree he should. The article says he has an extensive criminal record including violent crimes and probation violations. He has no respect for the law or others. He'll get out and go back to his life of crime. That's what he knows. My heart goes out to her family. May she rest in peace. "

" You know it's pretty sad that Cherlyn "LeeLee" Peters was shot because I respected her in so many ways. It's so hard for me to believe that she is really gone. She will always be loved but never forgotten. I hope they give this loser that did it the death penalty because now her children have to grow up without their mother. I sent all my love to her family. "

" This type of story begs the question, what do these women find attractive about this type of low life scum. The guy is garbage and she invited this into her life and the life of her children. How can people be surprised when something like this happens to women that date this garbage. Everyday I see women that literally look for this type of thug then they want people to feel sorry for them when they become a victim of this type of activity. "

I can understand this statement if it were to those kids who robbed the gun store but this is not a situation of a young person doing something stupid. this was a grown animal killing in cold blood.
